There isn't anything wrong with expanding the genre to another demographic in my eyes. Star wars isn't the exclusive domain of those who watched a new hope in it's original run. We fanboys seem to think too often that each new product that us not in line with our vision is an affront to our beliefs. I simply see this and say-- hey, another thing I'll never watch. I do, however, wish that he would try to meet the needs of his various fanbases. Yes I hated the second trilogy, but he was trying to reach out to a different audience. Why not also tailor a product towards us as well?

Lol. I want to see you try Jedi baby cosplay.

I guess what I am saying is that there is no problem for me if he does these things. But why not also do something that appeals to you and me. They aren't mutually exclusive as he appears to care little about oversaturation. EA is all excited about their star wars mmorpg, but that's not my thing. Swbf3, a good DVD/movie/tv show, or something that targets an adult population should be considered in addition to this new world of jarjars.

Hmmm. I'm with Zabka here on some things and Des on others.

The guy can do what he wants... and it's fine if he wants to fart crappy tie-ins all over the place. It is his franchise to ruin.

However, you can do things without being a complete toolbag about it. For example:

Yes, he released the original films in their original form on DVD way after the special editions had been released. But let's look at what he did.

          1) They aren't cleaned up. It's the footage before any of the cleaning up was done. Why, on Earth, would anyone do this? It only stands to reason you would have to clean up the footage BEFORE rotoscoping and putting together the "special editions" if for no other reason to determine how high a quality your "added effects" needed to be done in order to match the rest of the footage. It seems to be it would be a bigger pain in the ass to put out the crappier footage he did release than to put out a simply clean print quality. Direct FU to the fans, especially considering the mid-90's VHS tapes looked better in terms of color and saturation and fidelity.

          2) Stereo? Seriously? Just rude. Again, the entire soundtrack had been remastered in 5.1. Another slap.

          3) Letterbox? Seriously? This is the biggest slap in the face, and definitely the most offensive to me. What this means is that the entire movie is recorded in a "full frame format" of 4:3 or 1.33:1, and that the "black bars" you would see on an antiquated 4:3 SD set are simply applied to every frame of the image. This WAS done on the VHS Widescreen versions since that's the only way that technology can display widescreen, but this is DVD. Not putting them in Anamorphic Widescreen is the most telling admission that this was a move to tell the classic fans to shut up.

In other words, he made the original version of the film look as bad as humanly possible by making choices that deliberately sabotaged the quality of the film. Where the new ones have been cleaned up, the old ones were taken from a master which had 25+ years of degradation. Where the new ones were remixed, he went back and gave you the damaged sound there too, and to top it off, he essentially gave you a VHS version of the film on DVD, complete with the inherent flaw that even an "upscaled" image would not look since the film would force a full frame zoomed mode be used on any decent TV.

This means that while the CONTENT of the films are true to the 1977, 1980, and 1983 releases, the sad fact is that there was no restoration or attempt to make them look as they did WHEN released.

          He is a complete asshole.

I agree with you keyser.....IMO it is all about the marketing and money and Lucas is one of the biggest (if not biggest) offenders. I get so annoyed by this. Look at LOTR release and how they milked it..release each film...release together...release separate DVDs, release extended editions, release them together, release extended together....in the future re-release. Look at the whole avatar thing now..they are going to release a barebones DVD next month, then in November re-release a DVD extended, and then next year a 3D version. F these con men. All industries do this to some degree....check out the book Selling the Holocaust by Tim Cole..great book that looks at this marketing aspet for the Holocaust with films like Schindler's List and books like Diary of Anne Frank...but you have other industries like music, toy, and film that just are shameless with the exploitation of the consumer...and what do we do about it....we grab our ankles and lub our anuses.

For me, it's sad watching Lucas sit back, and over the years, destroy something special from my childhood.

Those bad ass faceless soldiers of the Empire...?

              Just started out as clones.

Bad ass faceless hunter killer Boba Fett, the mystery man no one knew his past..?

              Just another clone.

Bad ass faceless Darth Vader, rated as the #1 of all time villain..?

An even worse whiny cry baby, than his son.

Jar Jar...Fart jokes in Star Wars...really now, have we sunk that low?

              The droid army.....?

Instead of a bad ass army of "Terminator" Droids should've made anyone shit their pants when faced by a complete army of them?

And they're spindly idiots that can barely stand up, and crack jokes..?

Excellent acting like "I thought we agreed NOT to fall in luv"

              *Pukes*...

WTF ? is this a secret passionate love affair, or a business agreement?

For myself, it's like this for what Lucas is doing:

It's like watching someone take their most favorite, beloved, and cherished child, watching them kill them, hack them to pieces, and then throw them into a filthy trash dumpster.

              Why? Just why..?

If Lucas was only interested in making money, we'd have SWBF3 already.
It's kinda like he secretly hates it (Star Wars), and is trying to ruin it on purpose.
It's the only explanation that makes sense to me..

              F'n Jedi BABIES ..??!!??

What's next? "Silence of the Lambs Babies"..?

"Riddick" Babies, with like 'lil necromonger tykes running around poking people with sporks, with kiddie voices hollerin' "you keep what you kill"?.

              It's just wrong..

Lucas already tried it with the "Droids", and "Ewok" cartons, and we all know how wel they did. Just as good as the Gundam babies show did. BADLY.

All I need is my time machine, and my shovel...

              Please..?

Don't get me started on that "Droids" series...I saw a couple of episodes when I was little and even remember saying to myself "this isn't Star Wars" so I guess that's when my common sense developed lol. The problem is that a lot of series, like Star Wars, just aren't geared toward that young of an audience (hence why it's bound to fail). From a business perspective I can see why they would do this. However, as a SW fan and using common sense I can't see why they waste their time with stuff like this to earn LESS money than they would by making SWBFIII and make MORE.

Des, if you think SD Gundam was bad (assuming that's the series you were talking about) then you don't want to see Super Hero Squad...I never thought they could make Marvel heroes/villains look so bad.

Yes, I'm referring to that SD abomination. As a big Gundam fan, it just made me sad.

As the new Marvel "Super Hero squad", after seeing baby Wolverine, and my favorite bad ass of all time "Dr. Doom"...?

Well, I just wanted to drink myself into a more alcohol induced stupor than I normally do, then weep, and fall asleep, and piss myself on the couch.

Then wake up and just ask myself...."Why..?"

"Why would they do such a thing, and why do I keep doing this to myself, when I only know it's only going to get worse?."

But I guess that's just life, and the pursuit of the "all mighty dollar".

But if I could ask Lucas one combined question, it would be this...:

"Why do you hate something so fucking cool that you created, Do you want to destroy it. Are you bitter because you as a creative person couldn't really make anything else once it spun out of control with the public?."

As much as it may be his cash cow, kinda like Leonard Nimoy, I do think that deep down he hates it, and resents it, but it does "pay da billz." "So what da fuck, I might as well milk it for all it's worth".

After all is said and done, it's all he truly has, and what he will be remembered for throughout time. Even if he had other ideas. Like Nimoy, this role is basically all he'll be known for, wether he likes it or not. That's just how life is.

                  I dunno.

But from my humble drunken opinion, Lucas has taken the coolest thing ever made, and honestly tried to openly ruin it, the best he can. Star Wars isn't a movie, anymore than Star Trek was just a dumb TV show. Like it or not, they ARE cultural icons. The ideas, like babylon 5, and "Firefly", have taken on a "life of their own", due the fan love.

It's grown beyond their control in a way, and I think they (the creators) hate it, just because of that fact.

Or maybe I just think, or drink, too much.

                  Des.

                  Who knows?
