    Sony PS3? Bye-Bye Linux !!....

So it seems like what everyone thought was a April fool's day joke...well...

Thanks again Sony !! I hope Sony gets their combined asses sued for this. :D

Mandatory forced update..to remove what was a selling factor for them..Post purchase..?

    OooOOOoo !!!!

Wow...and I thought they were just a 'lil hostile to their customers wishes?

I will NEVER buy a Sony product again.

    Hmmm...? :

The feature of “Install Other OS” was removed from the new “Slim” PS3 model to focus on delivering games and other entertainment content.

Please be assured that SCE is committed to continue the support for previously sold models that have the“Install Other OS” feature and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases.

Although it’s disappointing that Sony have removed the feature from new models, It’s good to have this public assurance from Sony that at least the feature won’t be removed from older models which are already working.
    LIARS !!

How long before these assholes "decide" to remove our B/C for future PSN store sales?!?.

I agree with you Deslock. This is BS. I was looking forward to the possibility of running another OS on my ps3. Hopefully we'll get firefox as a consolation gift.

      :

It's pointed out that this update is strictly voluntary, although if you don't download the new firmware you won't be able to connect to the PlayStation Network, play any games online, play any games or Blu-ray movies that "require" the new firmware, play any files kept on a media server, or download any future updates. To put it simply, if you don't grab the update, the system will become useless to you as a gaming or media machine.

      Is this slope... slippery?
The ability to run Linux was never available on the second-generation PS3 Slim hardware, but the problem is that now the option won't be available in hardware that could previously install Linux. There is no reason for this, other than Sony decided it was no longer safe. While it's hard to argue that running Linux was a major selling point of the system, we've heard from many people who enjoyed the feature. Now, to continue using their system as a gaming machine, they need to give up a feature that was advertised as part of the hardware they bought.

That's a somewhat scary precedent, and it underscores the fact that this generation of gaming consoles are as much about the firmware as the hardware. Our advice moving forward? Be aware that Sony has changed its mind on major features in the past, take the company's sweeping statements with a grain of salt, and don't buy any hardware for a single feature. It's very possible someone will decide you really don't need one of the system's advertised advantages, and take it away.

I say we all pack up our consoles and go down to your local SonyStyle store and demand for a refund. Since they are changing the console from what you purchased if from you should have the right to refuse to take this laying down.

I think the more I think about this the more pissed I get. I don't blame the Hacker/Modders they are just doing what they are meant to...... stirring the pot to create competition and excitement for something they already love.

On Geohot's Blog people have started harrassing the poor guy.http://geohotps3.blogspot.com/2010/0...r-platter.html Get at Sony they are the onces being douchbags. Adding crap that people don't want, messing up the consoles and then Charging you to fix them when it's clearly they're fault.

What ever happen to costumer service? What ever happen to This is mine I paid for it I should have the right to do with it what I please?

And Sony pulls this shit, right when I was seriously considering updating. *snorts*

All these firmware updates say that they're voluntary. You have a "choice".

You can download them and allow Sony to change the way your machines act, and the onscreen appearence, that they see fit, with absolutely no options to revert to prior versions, and remove prior functionality.

          Or.....

Don't "upgrade", and not be able to buy any new Blu-Ray movies, buy any new games, and no longer get online, nor use the PSN. Basically turn your machine into a DVD player, that can still play older PS3 games. (in other words, my world now.)

They have a word for that.

          Blackmail.

Now, if this goes through, I sincerly hope a class action lawsuit is finally started. When you purchased a PS3, You have every legal intent, that the machine will operate as stated. When you purchased it, you didn't have to sign a EULA, or a TOS. Your receipt is your contract. For them to remove functionality from your machine, for what was openly advertised as a selling factor when you purchased it, with no choice for you the consumer, when they plainly stated said functionality would NOT be removed.....that is fraud.

It's going to be interesting to see how all this plays out if Sony doesn't backpedal.
Remember, people have sued over getting burned by hot coffee, and won substanial amounts of cash. Verizon tried this same stunt with their phones, was sued, and lost. ;)

Yeah I agree. I'm thinking I may not update.....this time around. Geohot just put out a bulletin about the situation. I just posted it on the PS3 hacked by Iphone Dev thread

I don't really want to hack my console I just want it to do what I bought it for. I want to use linux if I choose to.

Bypass the firmware updates with this. I don't have a laptop, so it won't work for me. Good luck and God bless.:

After reading a lot of posts on the PSboards...it looks like the vast majority are hating SONY for this update so I can see a future update having Linux re-installed once SONY realizes how they messed up. This will probably be sooner than later when SONY sees a drop in sales with the PS store lol.

Don't forget that slimey Sony also tried the CD rootkit software. They got sued for that one, and lost. Just because they have a big legal dept. doesn't mean that they're right, or that they will win against their own customers.

Lose linux, or lose your functionality. Whichever way you go, you lose.

Legal or not, That's now for the courts to decide. But it's still a dick move, and a shitty thing to do regardless.

                        Sony's Apology

                        FTA:
" We are sorry if users of Linux or other operating systems are disappointed by our decision to issue a firmware upgrade which when installed disables this operating system feature. We have made the decision to protect the integrity of the console and whilst mindful of the impact on Linux or other operating system users we nevertheless felt it would be in the best interests of the majority of users to pursue this course of action.

As you will be aware we have upgraded and enhanced functionality and features of the console by numerous firmware upgrades over time and this is a very rare instance where a feature will be disabled. Further enhancements are in the pipeline.

Users do have the choice whether to install the firmware upgrade and this is clearly explained to them at the time the firmware upgrade is made available for installation. Furthermore our terms and conditions clearly state that we have the right to revise the PS3’s settings and features in order to prevent access to unauthorised or pirated content.
                        "

Granted, I do know alot of people didn't use this feature, which is why Sony pulled this crap in the first place, because they figured they'd only piss off a minority of their customer base.

Geohot has always said from day one, the the stuff he played around with, in NO way could allow you to pirate games, or even play pirated games. All he could do is play around in the PS OS on his own system, and in no way could it be used to affect anyone else. Kind of like just looking around in your own registry, isn't going to allow you to mess with anyone else's. The PS3 only plays Blu-Ray movies or games, you can't burn them with it, with or without Linux. I have never seen, nor even heard of ONE pirated PS3 game. Ever. If I go into my Compy's BIOS, it cannot in any way let me do any funny business on anyone else's compy hooked to a game, or network. So the reply that "It's for the safety of everyone", is an outright lie. Sony is terrified of anyone looking at the PS3 Sony OS with Linux, even though no one can do any harm with it.

MS bans any modded box, and rightfully so. They should. But they didn't remove the X-Box OS from everyone, because a few were up to no good. And that's how it should be. 99.9% of the Sony phat PS3's with Linux, were just using their machine as a high powered computer, which it indeed is. They used Linux, because the Sony PS3 OS is so shitty. Hell, even most of Sony's own PS3 websites don't show up right on their own browser!

Sony didn't sell me a gaming console. They told me that it was a multi media hub. S.C.E.A. is what my PS3 says when it boots up.

                              Sony Computer Entertainment of America.

Not SGEA...Sony Gaming entertainment of America.

So now all those people that bought the original machines for learning how to program with the Cell based engine, and those that also used their machine as a computer, are now officially screwed. And mind you, that reply came from Sony U.K., and they have been responding to their blogs for the E.U.
                              Sony U.S....? Nothing. At all.

We as launch machine owners, paid waaay more for these features, than what new PS3 owners did. With this new update, for those that downloaded it, basically now have a PS3 Slim, that has B/C. For me, as complaints go, that's a biggie. Cripple so many machines, just because Sony is afraid a few, and I mean few in the most literal sense, may look and poke around in the Sony PS3 OS?

And so, they're going to get sued. And I sincerly, with all my heart, hope they lose. You don't punish a million people, because 5 might be up to no good.

Honestly, there are millions of PS3's out there right now. How many people do you think are earnestly trying to crack it in comparison? Pirating? How many writable Blu-Ray discs have you seen in stores? How many torrent sites for bootleg PS3 games..?

I'm not even mad anymore about Sony, and their shit "mandatory" updates. I have my PS3 for B/C, DVD's, and older PS3 games now. And I will not ever update until they stop this stupid madness of theirs. If Sony decides to "punish" me because I don't want their shit updates from ruining my machine, by keeping me from spending my hard earned money on them, on the PSN, new games, and Blu-Ray movies, then so be it.

I'm quite sure that MS won't mind a bit with me spending my cash with them. LOL!

What I find ironic is that the people at Sony making these ass hat decisions, aren't even gamers. These are suits and ties that have absolutely NO clue about their own customer base. Hence the customer rage since 3.0, that they're still ignoring to this very day. I guess that they're thinking that if they ignore it, all the bitching will just go away.

                              Nope.

But maybe all the lawsuits will make them notice where it truly counts; in the money dept.

Or maybe I'm just an old crank, that expects the worst, and hopes for the best.

                              Tie.

P.S. But I can tell you this in all true honesty, I will NEVER buy Sony again, for anything. Yep, that's showing me who's boss of my money! ;)
