Not to stir this anymore but doesn't Sony have the right to keep you from uploading an OS that could hack their network? I mean essentially isn't that modding your system? MS bans people from Xbox Live if they detect you have a modded console. You can even report people with mods through player review. So doesn't Sony have the right to "force" you to upgrade if they suspect people are hacking their servers or systems with their own product?

And to be honest, sorry Keyser, but I just don't get the whole Linux thing. I tried, I really did, I still am trying to love it but I miss my iTunes.

        @Solo
I get missing iTunes... or whatever. But I love me some Linux, mainly from the point of view of not having to deal with virus/adware every day.

As far as the "Install Other OS" feature... had I ever used it, it probably would piss me off GREATLY. I had set aside the partition to do so, but never actually committed on MY OWN system. It sucks that it was removed as an option, but for me it wouldn't be a dealbreaker, since the system itself runs great. I did buy a PS3 for gaming, and the extra functionality is really nice (BD player, Media Hub, CF reader, insane USB device support), but none of those things going away would be dealbreakers.

Yes, Sony has every right in the world to protect their products. Geohot has already said that the stuff he found, in no way hack into anyone else, or even hack into Sony's network. This quote should help explain it a bit more Solo:

The point is that some of us use it for both, and we shouldn’t have to choose. The reason for forcing the choice on us is weak; some vague and unexplained notion of security. Rresumably, it’s related to an exploit that takes a fair amount of effort (both hardware modification, and software tinkering) to even take advantage of. The security threat to the end user from said exploit is null, since you have to do it to your own system to open yourself up to any potential risk. The potential threat to Sony’s is extremely small, as there would be very few individuals who would even attempt to apply the exploit, and the exploit hasn’t actually allowed any of the concerns to fruition yet. Still, considering the exploit to be a legitimate concern, Sony’s response is like using a sledge hammer to kill an ant. It may work, but there are probably far more appropriate solutions.
So since Sony found out that ONE person used Linux (with extensive modifications to do so), Sony gets scared, and instead of fixing the hole this one person found, the force removed Linux from EVERYONE that had it installed.
MS detects cheaters and modders with software detection. MS doesn't remove the old X-Box OS from ALL of their customers that has it, only those that are up to no good.

That's a BIG DIFFERENCE between MS, and Sony.

So I've been looking at 360's.

Yentis says I should buy an Elite with a recharge pack.

            What do you guys recommend?

I've waited sooo many months for Sony to finally come to their senses and fix this shit. I never figured in a million years that Sony would do this "forceware" shit. They didn't do it with the PS1 or PS2, So I didn't know any better at the time.

            I know better now.

7000 posts against this last insult, and Sony is still ignoring us. Not even one reply. That tells me all I need to know. It's time to move on. It's the same to me, as having my microwave telling me what food I can heat up in it, or not use it anymore. I'll be damned if any fucking machine I bought with my own hard earned money, will TELL me what I can, and cannot do with it, because some corporate assholes thinks what's best for me.

I don't take it from my own government, and certainly not from some foreign owned game company. Sony's own arrogance is unbelievable, just to ignore thousands of people saying that they HATE their "forceware", without even one response from them.

            And that's customer service?

To brick your customers machines with faulty firmware, and blame it on your customers? Even the slims are bricking with this last Linux removing "firmware",
And it's their fault?, because of a EULA?

God, how I hope they get sued, and then some.

So DSA, what kind of X-Box should I buy?

At least if their shit bricks a machine, they fix it for free..

            Des.

Get the Elite cause now you get Halo ODST which you should trade in immediately or see if you can find any MW2 consoles left on Gamestop and get those.

Get the Elite with a extended warranty(if available), and Gears of War 2. The game of the year edition has all the map packs included for $30, which is bullshit but thats a whole other thread. I know it has its problems but warzone is ok for the most part, the cheaters stick with respawn games where the most points are. It would be nice to have another DSA to play with me. Theres also MW2, Bad Company 2, Splinter Cell Conviction and Ghost Recon Future Soldier comes out in Oct and looks kick ass.

The other thing is if you aren't near your router for a direct connect you will need a wireless gaming adapter. The xbox ones are easiest to setup but linkays makes them too. Some powerline adapters work too, but not all.

Since you liked mw, get mw2 to play with the most dsa in a game.
You're the best! Around! Nothings gonna ever keep you down!

Alright Des Check this out. This seems to work to bypass the firmware updates. This should allow you to get online without having to update......what I would do is make sure you don't have any credit card info stored on your console.

Des if I was you I wouldn't get a 360, yet. I would try and update your PS3. It's a cheaper way to go. If the update breaks your PS3 you haven't lost anything.

Another option is to sell your PS3 and games.

The reasons I say try the update are

                      1. If it works it costs you no money. An Elite plus 13 month membership will run you close to $350. That's not counting any games you may purchase.

                      2. I don't know this size of your PS3 gaming library or your BluRay library. If you do go the 360 route you will have to sell your PS3 games and you know they kind of hit you'll take on that from a Gamestop type of store. With your movies you will either have to sell them or buy a separate BluRay player to watch them. A BluRay player will run you $150 to $200. So now you're looking at $550 for a total purchase.

                      3. BluRay has changed their standards in the discs so that is why many of the newer BluRay discs will not run on the older players or even the PS3 without an update to read the new discs. So if you stick with BluRay make sure your new player has the ability to update itself ether through a connection to the internet or through a USB port.

                      4. I am not sure what types of games you like, but we are playing MW2 and that is currently $60 and not counting the map pack for it that is $15. Also if you want to play with members of your family or have friends over you will need an extra controller. They will run you $40. Granted you can sometimes find a bundled Elite that will come with a game and an extra controller so keep that in mind. Also since the 360 will use wireless controllers you will either have to buy AA batteries and replace or recharge them yourself or get a battery pack with a charging station, which is what the majority of the DSA use. The battery pack and charging station is $27 to $30 bucks.

                      5. Right now you're running over $700 if you get a 360 Elite, extra controller, BluRay player, 13 month membership, batteries, and a game.

I'm all for you coming to the 360. I just want you to make an informed decision. Look over your options of maybe selling the PS3 to get as much as you can for it. Look at trying the update. Look at selling the PS3 to buy a new slim model. I just want you to be informed and if you make it over to the 360 we will welcome you!

Well, I should've bought one awhile ago, but the 360's were bricking horribly then. So like I was doing with Sony now, I had to wait for MS to get it all figured out and fixed.

And see, that's one of my points, most companies should want to fix stuff for their customers, and make them happy. That helps build brand loyalty. Pissed off, furious customers, are not going to buy from that company again, that insults them, and then ignores them. I don't know what happened to Sony. I guess that they've become soo big, that they think what, or how, their customers think about them, just doesn't matter to them anymore. Sure, they blow smoke up our collective asses and say they want our feedback, they get over 7000 posts 99.9% of pissed off and infuriated customers, and we don't even get a template "We'll look into it" response. Not even one response.

I cannot in good faith support Sony anymore in any way whatsoever now. They're open liars, and manipulators. Granted, I know most big corporations are nowadays, but to have the gall to openly slap their customers in the face?

Money isn't a real concern of mine, in regards to how much I have to spend to get a good gaming rig. Principle is. (Not that you all would ever know that of me by now..LOL!) I spent well over $1,000.00 for my Phat, that now, if I updated, would be "downgraded" to a $300.00 machine(Slim) with B/C (that is until Sony decides to take that away from us too).

For me personally, it IS a battle of principle. Of moral values. I have, and will, ALWAYS hate "pay for play". But, I have always been a consumer rights advocate also, since High School. That for me, is a much stronger issue.
If I just wanted to game, I'd just get a Wii, and be done with it. The reason I game, is to be with my brothers. Why would I spend so much extra money on a 360..?

                        My DSA, and your DSA.

                        That's why.

Because you guys are f'n worth it. Period.

Des if I was you I wouldn't get a 360, yet. I would try and update your PS3. It's a cheaper way to go. If the update breaks your PS3 you haven't lost anything.
I'll prolly keep my old PS3. If I update and it bricks my shit, I'd lose my B/C. And I do have a large library of PS2 games, and I sold both my extra PS2's, because the PS3 Phat has B/C, one of the main reasons I bought the damnable thing in the first place. And I'm still buying older PS3 games to play on it to this very day. That and my wife loves Little big planet, and is pretty kick ass on Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, and her golf games. I just won't update it through new movies or games. I like my Phat as it is now. No two clocks, no chime removed, no large useless, unneeded icons for the PS store that I can't remove or change.

There's an old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". There was nothing wrong with the old Phat PS3 in the first place, besides that broken ass web browser, that even the slims still have, that can't even work on Sony's own websites. Now how's that for irony?

I can say this as a gamer that's been killin' shit since the Atari 2600. I have never once, in the life cycle of any gaming machine, seen the parent company remove features from their customers. Change stuff for the better..yes. Add new features and new hardware to advance the lifecycle of their machines....yes.

You don't as a company wishing to beat your competition "downgrade" your machine to make sales....you give them more, not less. You make the extra money spent be worth the investment to your customers.
Ken Kutaragisan stepped down because of this. And I cannot help but think of him looking at Sony today, and crying. This isn't what he wanted for the PS3.

But alas, as always, I digress.

I'm all for you coming to the 360. I just want you to make an informed decision.
That's why I asked which one I should get, and ya'll have given me much food for thought. Thank you all, I truly appreciate it. :D

Fromunda, dude....honestly, besides RaTix, Zabka, and myself, there isn't anyone anymore oldskool DSA, than yourself. I still remember how brutal you and RaTix could be on SWBF1 with that damn sniper rifle

Rage, I wish you would've waited before you let Sony rape your machine, but at least Geo posted how you can bypass it. Yes, I can bypass the updates now since I've been informed how to, but Sony still keeps me from buying any new games, or movies, until I also allow them to rape my machine with their "forceware".

I still cannot see for the life of me, how keeping me from giving Sony my money, until I "update", is actually a "punishment" for me.

That has to be the most convoluted train of thought I've ever seen, ever.

So I refuse to "update", and ruin my machine. So Sony decides to "punish" me by keeping me from buying any more of their new games, movies, or stuff from the PSN store?.

That's a "punishment"?, by not allowing me to spend my hard earned money on them?, are they really that arrogant, to think that "hurts" me?...LOL!!! :D

Well, I'm sure that there are others out there that are more than willing to "accept" my money.;)

That's showing me who's boss Sony....

                          Riiiight.
