It definitely will add up. But the companies will point out that dlc is optional. So the base game is still the same price. This is beneficial to the degree that those revenue streams are only going to accrue to the company to the degree they have a big enough installed base willing to shell out the cash. So they have to make the games good enough for you to want to buy dlc. But the attach rate is still quite low.

20 mm dlc packs have been bought over all Cod games. There have been about 40mm units sold of mw, waw, and mw2. So the average is 1 map pack per 2 cod units sold. When you figure that most people have 2 or 3 cod games and there was 1 pack for mw1, 2 (?) packs for waw (I think?), and 2 packs for mw2, the number of gamers buying dlc is not high. Most people on xbox don't have gold--I think it is around 13-14mm people for about 32mm machines sold, and Sony still only has about 20 mm online for 30mm ps3s--and many people have more than one account. So the number of people online is lower than you'd think. It's surprising. That's why stuff that seems like it should be dlc is often packaged as a new game. Gta4 dlc sold so poorly they put it out on disc that didn't require the orig game. The biggest selling game ever to that point suffered from too many people selling the game to gamestop or on Cl/eBay.

So developers need to create games that people love and will play a long time to maximize. However, until more people are online and keeping their games, costs look likely to stay high. They need to hit a point where the installed base of customers is big enough to offset lower prices--and the number of people willing to shell out the cash needs to drop enough so volume declines outweigh price increases.
You're the best! Around! Nothings gonna ever keep you down!

Solo, damn man you definately win! If it's something you love though and is your main hobby then why not?

If you want to compare gaming to other hobbies then gaming for the most part is usually cheaper. For example I enjoy hunting...nice bow can run $1K, guns the same, arrows $15 a piece, bullets etc etc.

I dont mind the DLC as long as they put some time and effort into making it good. I can't wait for the Zombie pack for Red Dead Revolver!!!

I would have to concur with Zabka, he pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Even so, M$ is still going to make some serious bank with this. But also as Zabka pointed out, the overall cost is still less than a dollar a month, which isn't at all horrible.

It's going to cost more to do this kinda stuff, and the companies aren't going to just eat that cost. Just like the cost of shoplifting for retail stores.

They're just going to pass that cost back to the honest consumer through higher prices.

It isn't right, but that's just the way it is.

People steal, and so the store loses money, so they then slightly raise the prices of everything else a bit to make up for it. They are not going to eat that loss. They just pass the extra cost on to you, the honest customer. (Another reason why I HATE theives so much)

Making games costs more, and hosting them online more, so they raise the price of their service. No matter what, you can rest well beyond assured, that they will NOT risk losing a dollar for them to give you what you want. They will just get you to pay some extra for it.

These companies are in business to make and produce games. But they are more in business to make money for their shareholders. And they love them, faaar beyond how much they love you, the customer, or their own employees.

Just look at Bobby Kotick for example.

Like I said, it ain't right, but that's just the way it is.

Plus we are getting ESPN and Hulu very soon. Because of that I'm not too upset about it.

I mean I hate Microsoft and the 3shitty, but damn was I impressed with that ESPN stuff. I'm that guy who watches the same Sportscenter all day, so I would love to have that kind of thing on PS3. Oh well, can't have it all

The ONLY thing I don't like about ESPN is they said at E3 you will get over 1300 games to choose from....yea 1300? You better be giving me access to ALL the UNC games that are not on ESPN. I have a feeling its gonna be big name games and teams and that is my only issue.

And since you can buy prepaid cards just get like 2 one year cards and you are good till 2012, when we all die anyways.

Also without a doubt I bet you can get the Yearly cards for cheaper on Amazon. Who says you can't find deals on amazon?
