    Deadspace...Gaming horror..Etc.

Okay, I really, really like horror games. I don't really like horror or scary movies, but I love me some horror games. I guess because of just sitting back and just "watching" it like a movie, in a game you're actually immersed, and an active participant in it. :D

Oblivion certainly had it's moments, especially the Dark Brotherhood missions.
All the Resident Evil games rocked for me since the PS1. But in all truth 4 still has to be my personal fave. But I haven't beaten 5 yet as I recently got it.

    Bioshock.

    DAMN !.

This game blew my mind in it's depth and just pure awesomeness, plain and simple. I would've never thought a game could be that "smart", deep, and downright f'n cool. This game has layers upon layers of goodies. The PS3 has always astounded me from day 1 with it's graphics, and Bioshock takes full advantage of it's capabilities. It's dark, moody, and atmospheric. To stand there in a plexiglass tube and watch a whale just swim by is breathtakingly amazing ! I bought the game one afternoon, and literally stayed awake all night until morning to beat it. That's something I haven't done since the 90's with the first Nintendo. I haven't bought the second one because there's several collectors boxed sets at a nearby store, and I'm waiting for them to mark them down.

    Deadspace.

Playing the first one now in mission 4, and I already cannot wait to get the next one. Basically nothing more than Resident Evil in space. But I love Resident Evil, and I love space. Although I have to say the zero-g missions suck, which is why they gave him jet boots in Deadspace2. Listening to your guy gasp for air in a "space suit" sux. Until you figure out where you're supposed to go, you're going to die. A lot.

    Red Dead Redemption Undead nightmare.

Just lotsa good zombie shoot'em ups. Pure zombie killin' fun. It just doesn't get any better than this.

    Your thoughts..?

-Dead Space is fantastic. Period. Really smart gameplay innovations, such as HUD on the character and the "R3 homing beacon" keep you immersed and not needing to ever look at a map. Brilliant. I bought DS2 but haven't played it yet. It's just slick, and finds a fantastic balance between giving you just enough ammo and not so much that you are overpowered.

-RE4 was incredible. The Mercenaries bonus mode was enough to be it's own game and I was genuinely shocked at how good it was. The beauty here is going through it with your own limitations, since you really are quite a good bit more powerful than maybe you should be for a horror game, though they did an excellent job balancing this by throwing a LOT of enemies at you at once...

-RE5 was a big step down from 4, the controls are antiquated and just plain bad. I have the Gold Edition now, which has Move Support, but I haven't fired it up yet. Gameplay problems are an issue here since you character is so powerful I was actually able to go through it on the FIRST playthrough using nothing but handgun and knife on hardest initial difficulty. The secondary character also was a HUGE annoyance for me, taking away yet another thing that makes a game scary: isolation.

-Bioshock. Excellent in just about every way, and really sticks it to you. Not one bad thing about it. I have 2 but haven't played it.

-Silent Hill series. The early ones are masterful examples of isolation and confusion spilling into an intense and visceral fight for survival. Every encounter requires smart usage of weapons and ammo and it never lets you breathe. Some of the best games in the genre for my money.

-RE1-3, REmake. These are pretty good, with the REmake being EXCELLENT. Tough, isolated, and scary in different ways. Always limited resources, always alone, potential surprises everywhere.

-Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. GCN only, really fantastic... the game plays out in an extremely interesting way. There is a death in your family and you are exploring the mansion now in your possession. This serves as the "launch world". By solving puzzles in current day, you will find pages of an evil book. Whenever you find a chapter, your character will pass out and you will actually PLAY that chapter of the story with your family's fight against an ancient evil. Every chapter then has you playing as a different ancestor in a completely different time period spanning several thousand years battling this evil force. A brief sampling:
    -A centurion in ancient Rome.
-A young peasant girl in Brazil.
    -A WW1 soldier in Germany.
-An archeologist looking for artifacts in the jungle in the 80's.
Added to this mechanic is one where the game will actually mess with you based on your character's sanity. There is a sanity meter, and every fight with monsters takes a toll. You can restore it, but failing to do so will trigger some REALLY bizarre occurences... like your game erasing its save data... your TV cutting off... your character simple falling to pieces... the game rebooting... hearing a baby cry in one of your surround sound speakers... it's really unnerving and clever.

I've been a fan of the RE series since PS1 as well. RE2 and RE4 are probably my favorites in terms of story and gameplay. Dead Space is indeed awesome. I'm renting DS2 right now and the depth of the story and the way everything is laid out is pretty cool. I will admit there are some surprising moments in DS2 though. Especially when there's a load of necromorphs that like to get the jump on you when having to reload or move forward. The multiplayer is pretty fun too. I llke how you can pick spawn points when you play as a necromorph and sneak up on people. I'm surprised Broc hasn't picked up DS2 yet.

I'm currently playing Deadspace 1. It doesn't both me when I am fighting multiple bad guys, but it does bother me when you don't know what to expect around the next corner. This game keeps me on the edge of my seat. I have to play it with the lights on.

Thanks to Broc for talking me into finishing this game.

I forgot they released Bioshock for the PS3. It's a great game. I didn't not play the second one, but I am looking out for the third one because it's made by the same folks that did the first.

Thank you Keyser for bringing up "Silent Hill". I had completely forgotten about it.
Played the first one on the PS1 at night, and it gave me the willies so bad I had to get up and turn the lights back on. And I certainly don't scare easily at all. And the movie also rocks in it's own way and certainly has it's moments.

What I like about Bioshock and Deadspace both are their overall "Fun Factor".. You just go through them and have fun. They're challenging, but not so hard that you get frustrated and want to throw the controller at the window. Both have those random sounds out of nowhere that make you jump. After just starting Deadspace 1, I've already went out and got both of the Deadspace animated movies, and I highly recomend them for extending the storyline, but they're NOT for kids. They both have lots of ammo, and it's not to hard to figure out where you have to go. I found both of them in the bargin bin for $19.99 each, and boy, are they ever worth it ! :D Where else are you forced to kill crazy people, so a dude can make "art" out of their corpses..? LOL!

And Eagle is also right about Deadspace. The monsters are insanely quiet, and sneak up on you without you even having a f'n clue that they are right behind you. You're just walking about, ya turn around and "ACCCKKK !!!!" There they are, right in your face...!!! Too f'n awesome...

Yeah currently I am working on finishing Fallout: New Vegas once I do that I will get Deadspace 2. There are a ton of good games that are coming out soon and I really need to finish the ones that I already have because I know I am going to be swamped when it comes to games I need to finish this year, lol.

I started playing Deadspace this weekend and am in Chapter 6 now. Its a fun game. I like this better than Uncharted 2 actually (please don't scold me). You still have to figure out how to live through certain situations without the cheesy puzzles to figure out. The sounds/music really help build the suspense. The first 4 chapters were pretty easy (difficulty: normal) but these 5 and 6 have challenged me a little. Especailly when I had to shoot those damn asteroids. Now resources are hard to come by and find myself running out of ammo and running away from fights if possible....lol. The only thing that's aggravating is when in zero gravity it won't let me jump sometimes.

For you guys who've played through this do you have any tips on weapons to purchase. I don't have the assault rifle since it seems like the only way to get ammo is to by it. I really like the line gun so far.

When you purchase weapons and equip them in your loadout, ammo will start to show up everywhere. Don't forget to keep a lookout for power nodes so you can upgrade your weapons. The weapons I used more often than not were the Cutter and Line Gun. Those seem to do the job quicker. The rifle is pretty much a waste because it sprays everywhere so you waste more ammo. You need to aim for the limbs. You can also use your kineses to pickup stuff and launch it at the bad guys.

One thing I would tell you is to be careful when you run into the pregnant fatty, those are the ones that when you kill them the little crawlies fall out of him. I found that if you shoot the legs out he will fall and then take his arms off without shooting him in the stomach. That way those little bastards stay in the stomach.

Also it looks like you will be running into the crazy doctor who made a baddy that doesn't die. Just shoot his legs out so it gives you time to run. It takes time for his legs to grow back. You need to lure that guy into the center of the chamber, stasis him and run to the room with the switch. Hit the switch and he will be trapped. You do run into him later and then you have to fry his ass with the jet engine.

Yeah. I hate that regenerating bastard. I froze his ass in that center chamber. Haven't tried that Ripper Saw yet. Once I get some more cash I'll pick it up.

Thanks for the tip on the preggo fatties. I was shooting them in the arms and had to torch the little ones. Those little suckers are a pain to kill.

Best weapons for Deadspace 1 are the cutter, the line gun, the force gun, and the contact beam.

The cutter is the old standby weapon, if you only have that one gun then you can still pretty easily beat the game. The line gun is nice cause it has a wider beam and passes through multiple targets. The force gun is a shotgun basically big damage in close range and it doesn't burst the fatty's stomach. The contact beam is the big mamajama gun. Takes some time to charge a shot but should one shot sever any problem baddy's limbs. Good for using on the brutes.

The preggo fatties however I like to hit with stasis and then aim a line gun shot at their neck region, usually you can take off the head and both arms for an insta kill.

The flamethrower and the saw gun are fun but actually not that awesome. The saw is good for dealing with the swarm. Usually if you get swarmed it's by a bunch of lesser necros and the saw is good for dealing with them, especially if you can hit a bunch of them at once with stasis.

I never really found a special use for the flamethrower. If you like using flamethrowers however it is pretty cool, lol.

I don't remember at what point your run into the Exploders. Exploders are the suicide bombers of the Necromorphs, much like Crawlers. They initially move sluggishly, but are able to utilize surprising bursts of speed when they have sufficiently closed the distance between themselves and their intended targets. Their most prominent feature is the large, glowing pustule attached to their left arm, which is filled with some kind of explosive ooze reactive to blunt force. Try to kill these guys without blowing up the explosive sac. Then use kinesis to launch it at other baddies.

Broc's right about the weapons. Even in DS2, those are the best weapons (I prefer the javelin gun over the force gun though). Everything else seems too situational. Stasis is a must for the tougher Necromorphs...especially the "Hunter" (regen one).

@Broc: Did you reach chapter 14 in DS2 yet? Beware the Ubermorph...that's all I can say lol.

I am in chapter 10 or 11 right now, but your right about stasis. In harder difficulties stasis is something I concentrate on upgrading first, rig secondary, and then a favorite gun, usually the cutter.

Thanks for the tips Broc. I haven't ran into the suicide bomber guys yet but thats a great idea to use kinesis to launch its "bomb" at the other guys. Also, is there a way to throw things away from you with kinesis? All I know how to do is move stuff from side to side.
