LCD is the way to go. Plain and simple, Plasma's fail. Really fast, and the clarity and sharpness is night and day compared to an LCD.

Here's a helpful guide: http://lcdtvbuyingguide.com/lcdtv-plasmavslcd.shtml
Standard LCD's don't get as dark as Plasma, which is why Plasma was so popular with the videophiles. LED's get closer, without the power consumption of Plasmas.
It used to be if you wanted best picture quality OR larger TV sizes, you went plasma. If you wanted smaller TV sizes (under 42") or lower power consumption you went LCD.
Plasmas do lose brightness with age, usually losing about 50% brightness at 60,000 hours... which at leaving it on 24 hours per day at 100% brightness and contrast amounts to 7 years. I've been running mine averaging about 10 hours per day for about 6 years at about 60% brightness and 70% contrast. No visible change.
The only thing to stay away from outright is DLP, which is a projection type, so you end up spending a couple hundred bucks every other year on bulbs.Last edited by keyser28146; 11-25-2011, 01:07 AM.sigpic

Just picked up a 64.5" Sony LED 2D/3D Immersion Tech TV at Frys before the big Black Friday rush. It's the high performance XBR models. We normally sell it at $6000 but with the Black Friday sale it was reduced to $3500 and since I have my employee discount it dropped the price down to $2100. If you have the money to invest... I'd recommend going with the XBR series. There's NO TV on the market that stacks up to it. I'm saying this from a professional point of view as I make a living selling TVs.
On a funny note... At 2 am we had this hilarious guy come in bitching that our TVs were more expensive that Walmart's. I mean seriously?!? He's coming a 40" Samsung LED TV to a 40" Westinghouse LCD. Do people forget to do their research?sigpicComment

I'm jealous. Thats a nice ass TV.
And yes some people are just plain dumbasses. There's really no other way to explain it.

The innumerable caravan, which moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.

I have had my DLP for 6 years without a problem. They are the cheapest way to go super large for screens...although I bought mine 6 years ago, so it wasn't actually super large. Anyway, the only drawback to DLP is that it gets washed out when direct sunlight is on it. Otherwise, it looks great, is highly durable (replaceable bulb instead of busted pixels), and weighs about 30 pounds for a 55 in screen, so it is easy to move around. I actually wish they still made DLPs in the smaller form factors as they are cheaper than other flatter screens. You're the best! Around! Nothings gonna ever keep you down!

I actually like DLP for the reasons you describe (no burnt pixels), but may as well go projector...sigpic
