I was actually surprised we didn't have a thread for this already. Just wanted to start this to keep the shoutbox a little cleared. Also to give a place for those affected to share stories, vent frustrations, or ask for help if needed.
Let me start it off by giving my recap of the situation. Monday morning started to debate on whether I should head to my sister's or stick it out here. Kind of good I left. I have Well water so with no power, no water. No water, no flushing. And unless I'm trying for rank 100 on BF3 I'm not using a shit bucket.
Monday into the evening everything was still ok, and actually we all thought maybe we would miss the worst of it as it didn't seem that bad out. I still had power, my sister did too. Then 6pm came around, and shit got serious outside. We didn't get much rain at all, just wind. Which is probably worse with all the trees in the westchester, rockland, orange and putnam counties which surround the tri-state area.
About 7:30pm Monday lost power, everywhere. We headed out Tues morning.. or tried too. Big tree down across two roads that run parallel to each other to get out from my sister's house. Tried going down some side streets to take back roads out, but trees down there too. Must have driven around for about an hour just trying to get out of a small 2-4 square mile area. Every road it seemed had trees down everywhere with power lines all over the place. We finally managed to find a path through to the main road.
If you ever wondered what John Stossel's libertarian roadways would look like with no traffic lights and laws, well I have seen it. I can't believe people are too fucking retarded or inconsiderate to realize that when a traffic light is out, you treat it as a stop sign. Trying to make a left across a 4 lane road with no traffic lights is not that easy. You eventually have to just ease your way out to block shit off and hope people are smart enough to stop and let you go.
Although I found that if you actually stop at a traffic light, everyone else gets the hint and starts doing it too.
I also found that there is a reason there is a line at McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts and not subway. Subway's coffee taste like burning shit. What few places were opened and with power were almost all packed.
To kill time instead of sitting in a cold house with no power, drove back here to check on things. See if anything fell on the house or my car. Same thing as trying to leave my sister's, I couldn't get to my house at all. Trees blocked every road possible. So had to wait until they cleared things up to even get back here.
Eventually my father got power, so we all headed there to take showers, and charge our devices. Then back to my sister's cold house to wait thing out.
All week long same routine. Wake up, go out and get coffee, drive to my town and try to get to my house, go charge things, then back to cold house to try and watch a movie on the laptop before the shitty battery died.
During the whole time I didn't see one fucking Con Ed (power utility) truck anywhere. Even near my sister's which is a main road that intersects with the parkway. However my power company NYSEG, they were everywhere. Even on Tues I saw a bunch of them out fixing lines, taking down trees, etc.. So all the people complaining about NYSEG not doing enough are fucking retards. They all live in the most wooded backroad areas and don't understand that there are more then just the trees on their street down. Just about EVERY single street in all the counties have at least one tree down, no joke. That's a shit load of downed trees and power lines.
Well finally got power back on Friday and was surprised. Was estimated that it would be sunday night before I got power. Got home and then had to empty the frig out because despite all the companies saying they were prepared and had dry ice, there was not one single place to get it.
I know many others had it a lot worst. I know my cousin in Jersey had to leave her house because of flooding and has a 1month new born. Her husband has family on the water that lost a lot as well. There was a boat and a hot tub in their backyard. They couldn't even get to the house because only emergency services were allowed in the area.
Fortunately there were minimal deaths associated with this. I'm glad to see our other NY/NJ DSA are doing ok. Some with frayed nerves and short tempers, lol, but that is all too understandable. It is a miserable experience to be without power, especially when the temps are dropping.
