    Hurricane Sandy Thread

I was actually surprised we didn't have a thread for this already. Just wanted to start this to keep the shoutbox a little cleared. Also to give a place for those affected to share stories, vent frustrations, or ask for help if needed.

Let me start it off by giving my recap of the situation. Monday morning started to debate on whether I should head to my sister's or stick it out here. Kind of good I left. I have Well water so with no power, no water. No water, no flushing. And unless I'm trying for rank 100 on BF3 I'm not using a shit bucket.

Monday into the evening everything was still ok, and actually we all thought maybe we would miss the worst of it as it didn't seem that bad out. I still had power, my sister did too. Then 6pm came around, and shit got serious outside. We didn't get much rain at all, just wind. Which is probably worse with all the trees in the westchester, rockland, orange and putnam counties which surround the tri-state area.

About 7:30pm Monday lost power, everywhere. We headed out Tues morning.. or tried too. Big tree down across two roads that run parallel to each other to get out from my sister's house. Tried going down some side streets to take back roads out, but trees down there too. Must have driven around for about an hour just trying to get out of a small 2-4 square mile area. Every road it seemed had trees down everywhere with power lines all over the place. We finally managed to find a path through to the main road.

If you ever wondered what John Stossel's libertarian roadways would look like with no traffic lights and laws, well I have seen it. I can't believe people are too fucking retarded or inconsiderate to realize that when a traffic light is out, you treat it as a stop sign. Trying to make a left across a 4 lane road with no traffic lights is not that easy. You eventually have to just ease your way out to block shit off and hope people are smart enough to stop and let you go.
Although I found that if you actually stop at a traffic light, everyone else gets the hint and starts doing it too.

I also found that there is a reason there is a line at McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts and not subway. Subway's coffee taste like burning shit. What few places were opened and with power were almost all packed.

To kill time instead of sitting in a cold house with no power, drove back here to check on things. See if anything fell on the house or my car. Same thing as trying to leave my sister's, I couldn't get to my house at all. Trees blocked every road possible. So had to wait until they cleared things up to even get back here.

Eventually my father got power, so we all headed there to take showers, and charge our devices. Then back to my sister's cold house to wait thing out.

All week long same routine. Wake up, go out and get coffee, drive to my town and try to get to my house, go charge things, then back to cold house to try and watch a movie on the laptop before the shitty battery died.

During the whole time I didn't see one fucking Con Ed (power utility) truck anywhere. Even near my sister's which is a main road that intersects with the parkway. However my power company NYSEG, they were everywhere. Even on Tues I saw a bunch of them out fixing lines, taking down trees, etc.. So all the people complaining about NYSEG not doing enough are fucking retards. They all live in the most wooded backroad areas and don't understand that there are more then just the trees on their street down. Just about EVERY single street in all the counties have at least one tree down, no joke. That's a shit load of downed trees and power lines.

Well finally got power back on Friday and was surprised. Was estimated that it would be sunday night before I got power. Got home and then had to empty the frig out because despite all the companies saying they were prepared and had dry ice, there was not one single place to get it.

I know many others had it a lot worst. I know my cousin in Jersey had to leave her house because of flooding and has a 1month new born. Her husband has family on the water that lost a lot as well. There was a boat and a hot tub in their backyard. They couldn't even get to the house because only emergency services were allowed in the area.

Fortunately there were minimal deaths associated with this. I'm glad to see our other NY/NJ DSA are doing ok. Some with frayed nerves and short tempers, lol, but that is all too understandable. It is a miserable experience to be without power, especially when the temps are dropping.

Im sorry to hear about the affected lives brother. I am glad to see that you are ok. Sandy was definitely a wake up call, in that no area on this planet is invulnerable to disaster.

That shit bucket reference had me laughin tho lol.

If anyone is in need of something make sure to let us know. I am sure we can help in some sort of way. Take it from a guy that has rode out these blasted Hurricanes in the past, it can be a bitch in the weeks following in just finding simple items in your local stores.

Just remember it will only get better and hopefully you don't see another one like this for 20 plus years. Also, it is a good thing to have a bug out bag with the essentials for these types of emergencies. Even for when the Zombie Apocalypse hits.

I'm sorry you had to go through that Ratix. My experience was nothing then. I just had no internet at all throughout the week so I had no way of communicating with anyone. Only via text if I had anyone's number and that was only Solo's lol.

There is the mysterious gas shortage(And I call it mysterious , because all of a sudden no station has gas? right).

Luckily I don't have weekday classes, but Cuny is so fucking retarded that they decided to resume classes on a fucking Friday when people are still picking up the pieces from the storm. The subway stations in NYC were flooded making it impossible to travel anywhere. Any stations there were no longer flooded were in service delays or no service.
I'm going to be really pissed if there really was class on Saturday, because I could not go at all. Even my bro who has a car wouldn't have been able to take me because he has been having such a difficult time to get gas. For the first time in a long time he's had to take the train just to get to work.

This storm has really shown the true nature of most human beings in this area. Greedy/Selfish/etc. The long lines at gas stations and people ready to fight really say alot about the general population of the human race.

When I traveled outside the street lights were out in many avenues and streets. Car just did not give a fuck for traffic or pedestrian crossing.
So yea.....many businesses were severely affected by this storm.

The gas lines are ridiculous and is the media's fault mostly. Weds was fine with gas stations. No lines, nothing. Sure there are many stations without power, but I saw gas trucks delivering gas to the ones that were opened. And more stations are slowly getting power and opening.
Then the fucking news starts talk about a gas shortage and price gouging, and everyone and their mother runs to the nearest gas station with all their cars, packed with every gas container they have in their house as well. Weds night and Thurs nothing but lines at all the stations. That's what caused the shortage. People panicking and running out to grab up all the gas they could after hearing the news. If they just continued on with getting gas as needed, and not being greedy panicky retards, we would still be fine on gas and not have a problem.

Mother nature really knows how to kick you when your down, then rape you in the ass with a tree branch even after you say uncle.
Apparently we got another nor'easter coming in on Wed. 20-30 mph winds, with up to 60mph gusts. Almost the same as what they were saying Sandy was. Hopefully most the trees that were gonna come down, are already down. Or else this could be a repeat of last week.

That sucks Ratix, I hope this next one doesn't hit you guys hard like Sandy did. Hurricane season is a bitch since you don't know what to expect. I'm grateful we didn't get hit by one this year. Stay safe my friends.

I'll never complain again about the mildly wet and windy weather we get over here... Keep safe and best of luck. Sorry to hear it's all so messed up over there.

It's quite odd knowing people in 2 of the neighboring towns that got fucked by sandy. Union Beach , where much like the more affluent shore towns had homes washed into the street. They had diving crews looking for bodies for 2 days once sandy had gone. And Keansburg. Another small town, kinda stuck in a land of its own. I'd been up and down that 1 mile stretch of boardwalk countless times, in many different "states." That boardwalk is gone. Much of it is covered in sand, useless. Animals from a 100 year old antique carousel still in use found almost all the way across town. Seaside, Pt. Pleasant - these were places i was just this summer. Gone. In less than 24 hrs these places were wiped out and will have to be rebuilt. Jersey shore wasn't what you saw on that mtv shitshow. It is it's own culture. If you've been there more than a few times you get it. I personally got lucky. My family is fine, I now have power. Minimal damage to the home. I pray to whatever deities are listening that this doesn't become a regular thing.

All of these pictures are from near my house.

I'm pretty sure this is the tree that fucked my street out of power.

This house is right behind mine. Most impressively, he got it cleaned up before my power even came back on.

This is my backyard. I got super lucky as I have a HUGE tree that could have fallen any which way.
It would have crushed my entire attic so I slept downstairs for a couple nights. I watched it on Monday night. It was literally spinning in a circle.
There was no way to tell which direction it would have fallen if it did.

We lost power around 8 p.m. on Monday night. The wind started to really pick up and the awning on my house began to raise in the air like the Titanic and then fall back down. Every time it came down, it would fall a little further. Eventually it snapped off and rolled right in front of my bay window but luckily it didn't hit it hard enough to break it. My mother and I went outside in the storm and carried it to the backyard so it wouldn't blow away and hit any cars. Such nice neighbors.

The traffic on Route 22 was ridiculous for the whole week, and it still is. Mile long lines backing up an entire lane for gas. And that was just the cars. Up near the gas stations were huge groups of people standing there with their gas cans.

Luckily, nothing too bad happened to us. We didn't get our power back until 5 PM on Saturday. I just feel bad for my Uncle. He lives in Little Egg Harbor. He didn't have the means to remove his boat from the water and it ended up in the street. His house was filled with 3 feet of water. He left his motorcycle in his friends garage which is up on stilts and that filled up with 3 feet of water also, so his motorcycle is pretty much ruined. He also found one of his friends dead, laying face down on the ground.

I'm glad to see everyone is more or less in one piece after all that has happened and me be happening.

Living in Florida I know every year I watch the storms roll in and hope I don't get hit by one. So far I have been lucky but know one day my luck will run out. Also as a city employee I'm obligated to stay and work the cleanup afterwards.

My time in the Army has taught me the pleasures of modern living. With sleeping in dirt holes in basic, living in a hangar for a month waiting to go and take part in the Indonesian Tsunami relief effort, and living 15 months in the middle of the Iraqi desert with 3 min showers and porta johns as a creature comforts. I know it can be rough with out things like power, hot food, and a comfortable place to sleep. But as they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and I think we have stronger few in DSA now.

If you guys need anything please let me know. I'm sure I can dig up my old gameboy and some AAs for a gamer relief fund lol

I got a few PSP's here if you need to kill anything. It's a tough situation out there Blunt. Sorry to hear about your many situations. But you sound like a guy that can keep his head in tact. Glad to hear everyone is ok .

I also had a bug out bag here even though i knew things would be ok here in DC area. You just never know. Plus i'm taking the whole zombie apocalypse as a way to prepare myself and my family for any situation. Living in DC is nice but if anything goes down we're fucked here.

Starting tomorrow I get to sit at home in my t shirt and shorts and work total loss claims from NY/NJ. As soon as some Hotel rooms become available I will be hopping in the car and driving my happy ass up there to work for a month. If any of you a-holes have allstate insurance you're likely to have to deal with me so just grab your ankles and smile, it will all be over in a miniute. :D

In all seriousness, I'm glad you guys are ok. Hopefully when I get up there we can go grab a beer. I know from an insurance side we are commiting over 400 adjusters to work the claims from this storm. Clean up will take a long time, but it will get there. Just try and be thankful for what you do have left and know that all of the rest can be replaced.

I have a rendezvous with Death, at some disputed barricade. It may be he shall take my hand and lead me into his dark land, and close my eyes and quench my breath, it may be I shall pass him still. I have a rendezvous with Death, on some scarred slope of battered hill. And I to my pledged word am true, I shall not fail that rendezvous.
