    High Ping

Usually, my ping is about 80-120. For the last week, it has sat anywhere from 250-400. This, obviously, sucks since the only servers I can play in without getting booted are clan practice servers. I think it has something to do with my ISP change, although that happened about a month ago (Newwave bought out Charter in my area). So far, I'm not impressed with anything except the cable (which isn't any different so far). I've tried turning off everything on my network but my PS2, using different ports on modems/routers, and I'm checking for viruses right now. If anyone has any suggestions on how to reduce my ping, I would appreciate some help. Otherwise, any suggestions on a new ISP? lol

Heh, hopefully not, lol. I live in a pretty small town and I don't even think most of my neighbors have computers, although I can pick up another network occasionally on mine.

PS-My scan is about halfway done and it's detected 32 files already... I think my computer may have been turned off the last few times it's supposed to scan for viruses. After it's done scanning I'll get rid of the viruses and see if that helps any.

It's finished scanning, I have McAfee and the only things it detected were cookies (the non-edible kind). The last thing I can think of that I haven't done yet is plugging my PS2 directly into my router or modem, which I really don't feel like doing right now. I'll probably try that tomorrow, and if it doesn't help then I'll know it's most likely not a problem with my network or computer.

Also, my internet connection doesn't seem to be any slower. Webpages load in about two seconds for me, as usual. My ping is just high. I've also noticed that I get more error messages when I try to login to MSN Messenger and I have to restart my network more frequently, but the connection still doesn't seem much/any slower. A couple months ago, my bandwidth was around 380kbps. Yesterday, it was 260kbps, and right now it's 367kbps. So, right now, I really don't have any way to tell why my ping is so high.

I used to have this problem. All I did was, when I saw that either servers were pinging high (which means I am) or I see my ping unusually high, I exit out of the server menu area, and the gamespy thing, back to where you choose either Internet or LAN. And go through internet, etc... back to the server menu, and see if my ping was lower, and it usually was.

IF that doesn't work for you, do the above steps BUT the "going back" parts, and disconnect your internet connection on your computer (or restart, whatever works) and reconnect it (not unplug / replug!), and go back through everything and see if that changed anything.

Thats the only solutions I ever had, both worked for me, might for you.
