After talking at Socom practice about graphical attributes of the two systems, SithWarrior made the very astute point that the only good way to compare is to see how they look playing the same sports games---the best comparable. NBA Street homecourt is a great title (I haven't picked it up yet), but I LOVED NBA Street 2---I used to pull out my multi-tap and get 2v2s going with my friends on the ps2.

Look at the list of videos--one compares the two side by side. Pretty cool way they did this. There are some differences, but to me it is like Coke and Pepsi. Different, but a matter of taste. Either way, next gen games are just getting sick looking. But I think that it seems that there is little meaningful difference between the two--and suggestions otherwise are much more the beliefs of fanboys.

Bottom line---these systems are going to be a lot more alike than different. Other than no rumble in the ps3 controller (and no replacable batteries) vs no motion sensor in the 360 controller, I think the early evidence suggests that the platforms each have technological advantages and disadvantages over each other. It looks like a draw to me.

I went 360 because xbox live is a superior gaming network and the greater installed base and titles should result in more games on the 360 than on the PS3 (not unlike how the PS2 beat the Xboxoriginal).

That's pretty cool Zabka. The only other comarision that I saw was done with one of the racing games. The 360 beat it in some areas and the PS3 won in others.

I've come to realize that the 360 online version is great and the way the controller feels is better to me than the PS3.

Have you heard about this Zabka?

Playstation fans look back in anger

British fans wanting to get their hands on the new Playstation 3 will have to pay £100 more than American users for an inferior machine.

Sony announced yesterday that the European version of its games console will play only a "limited number" of old Playstation 2 titles when it goes to sale next month.

The American model has much better "backwards compatibility" and plays almost all the old games.

Angry British games enthusiasts called the decision a disgrace and said they were repeatedly treated like second-class citizens by Sony.

Not only was the launch of the Playstation 3, or PS3, delayed in Europe for three months, but the console costs £425 in Britain — £105 more than in America.

Sony also refuses to make the cheaper 20GB version of the PS3 available in Europe despite selling it in America and Japan. British gamers will have to buy the most expensive 60GB model.

Backwards compatibility is a big issue, particularly for those who own a Playstation 2 and want to upgrade to the new, more powerful console.

When the PS3 launches on March 23, they either will have to keep their old machine, or throw out their old games.

An unrepentant Sony spokesman said: "Resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology."
I know M$ has screwed people over, but with the way Sony is treating people now I am glad the DSA is going the 360 route. The Emperor is wise and all knowing.

If i am correct, the DSA is split up between the 360 route and the ps2/ps3 route. There really isn't one console the DSA is sticking to. And what happens when/if BF3 comes out? We all want to play this game as a whole clan, but i'm pretty sure it will come out for the ps3 AND the 360.....so which console will we choose? There will be much conflict with this choice and i know supporters of each console won't give up without a fight.

So really you can point out the good and bad of each console, but it's not going to change many minds.

a fanboy's opinion wont be changed for sure. but most people who have yet to buy a next gen console either have not made up their mind or have done so on speculative or incorrect information. So the reality is that more information can only help. I was misinformed and illogically against the 360.

I was certain I was going the PS3 route and was not happy when I saw some DSA going 360. But then I got my big promotional Playstation magazine that was pumping up the PS3 and all of 2007's titles and expected dates...and I didn't see much in the way of exclusives or anything that made the PS3 better to me...the only two things that were of interest that I thought were exclusives were Stranglehold and Force Unleashed (untitled at that time). Since then I have found that they are 360 releases as well.

The end result will likely be that we will have people on the two platforms. We know that SWBF3 will not be a 2007 title. It is unlikely to come at any point before the 2nd Half of 2008. By then, we may see more people with both systems (if the PS3 gets some titles that I think are worth getting exclusively, then I will get it). But we will likely just have two divisions and the days of all of us playing together will be limited to PS2 games.

Listen to Zabka, if anyone can speak to you about the 360 he can. He was one of the main posters in the threads when supporting the PS3. Now look he is on the 360. Back in the old threads I was supporting the PS3, but now I'm on the 360. Honestly in the next 2 to 3 year the PS3 with it's blu-ray drive might be the best machine with the best games, but for now it's equal with the 360. What swayed me was Sony.

I am not a Microsoft fan boy, I'm a huge believe in open source. As time went on with the 360 and PS3 build up to launch I saw some bad things happening with Sony. First the PS3 was going to have all these features, but as time went on they ditched them after promises of not goint to do that. Microsoft charges you to play online and Sony doesn't, but Sony left the door open for the game developers to charge you to play. This does not sit well with me at all. Look at how Sony is treating the US customers by offering the exact same machine in Japan for less. Sony then turns around takes out the backwards functionality of the PS3, charges more for it and sells it to Europe. Microsoft may be asses when it comes to their OS, but with the 360 they have bent over backwards with listening to the game developers and customers. Sony at every turn has said screw you to the customers. That in my opinion is why I went with the 360.

          There are other reasons too.

norm, sithwarrior said he has a 360 also, but i haven't seen him online.

i don't see me getting a ps3 now (buying games for 2 differ systems, nah), unless my son gets one, but i'll probably just use his then, if he let's me, ha.

it will be interesting to see if and how well being able to play some games online with a 360 or a windows vista machine is going to pan out, anybody know much about this?

Unreal tournament, Huxley, and a bunch of others are slated to be cross platform between the PC and 360. No idea how well it will work---but PC guys have long said that the precision of PC gaming is so much higher than consoles, it will be interesting to see.

One of the Huxley articles I posted under the MMP Shooter thread has a little review of a demo that they saw of Huxley between the 360 and PC and they were surprised at how seamless it seemed and how lag free it was at the time that they reviewed it. Could be really interesting.

That would be nice to play some 360 people on my pc. I will probably be one of the last to switch systems and will probably wait for SWBF3 before I make a decision. If there happens to be no SWBF3 then well hell I will probably go with the system that more of our members have.

apparently eliminating the PS2 chipset from the PS3 in the European launch is being done as a cost saving move to try to stem some of the financial hemorraghing from the PS3 which is sold at a loss. It is believed that they will do this on future PS3 models in the US and Japan as well---although a price cut is not likely since that defeats the purpose on the margin line to begin with. Instead there will be softward emulators available for download on some of the games. This is what the 360 does.

I don't think backwards compatibility is a big deal---you can just keep your ps2. But the original premise (and is still true for the PS3's out there now) was that you could get high def graphics with your ps2 games on a ps3. With an emulator, that won't necessarily be the case. So if backwards compatibility is important to you and you are going the PS3 route, you will probably be better off getting one sooner rather than later when they don't include that chipset in the US market PS3s

Zabka, yeah the European versiion lost the ability to play PS2 games and is being charged a higher price for it. Also they are refusing to sell the 20gb version and are only selling the 60gb one. One of the huge points I heard at the beginning of this was that the 360 wasn't going to beable to play all the Xbox games but yet the PS3 would beable to play the all the PS2 games. Now Sony comes out and breaks this promise. Honestly this is a huge reason I went the 360 route. I got tired of being dicked over by Sony.

I know some of our members have PS3 andI have a question for them. Is SWBF2 better looking there or on the PS2? I heard the games didn't receive much of an update in the looks department when played on the PS3.

The point is that it is likely that ps3s manufactured for the US will likely also be devoid of the ps2 chipset in the near future as well. again, I don't think it is a big deal for most people (I never play really old games, and they would definitely have an emulator for socom and prob swbf1 and2). But for those who are considering the system in part because of full backwards compatibility, they probably either need to get a ps3 sooner rather than later or they need to make sure they hold onto their ps2.
