Steve Rogers, the alternate identity of Captain America, was set to stand trial after he defied a law that required all superheroes to be registered in the wake of a tragic accident that causes an apocalyptic event. Captain America, whose stars and stripes outfit was as recognizable as the shield he toted, surrendered to police, but as he ascended the stairs to the courthouse, a sniper's bullet finds the nearly-indestructible superhero, mortally wounding one of comic book's greatest legends. After the sniper, later revealed to be Crossbones, shoots Captain America, his fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and on-again, off-again girlfriend Sharon Carter shoots Steve Rogers three times with a pistol. Carter is revealed to be under the hypnotic suggestion of the diabolical Dr. Faustus.
