    PS3 drops in price

Sony drops PS3 price by $100. Will be introducing an 80gig drive model soon. I wonder if 360 responds or not with Halo 3 coming out.

Sony Cuts PS3 Price by 16.7 Percent
Monday July 9, 7:44 am ET
By Matt Slagle, AP Technology Writer
Sony Cuts Price on Current PlayStation 3 by $100 to $499, Introduces Higher-Capacity Model

Sony Corp. slashed the price of its current PlayStation 3 by $100, or 16.7 percent, and introduced a high-capacity model in an effort to spur sales of the struggling video game console.

Starting Monday, the current 60 gigabyte model will cost $499, down from $599.

The Japanese electronics maker also said it is introducing a new version of the PlayStation 3 with a bigger hard drive for storing downloaded content such as video games and high-definition movies.

The new PS3 increases the system's storage capacity to 80 gigabytes from 60 gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title "MotorStorm," a company spokesman said. It will be priced at $599.

The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States and Canada until August.

It plays into the company's upcoming strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said.

Karraker said further details on high-def movies for download would be released at a later date.

The announcement comes two days before the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., where dozens of industry heavyweights including Sony rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. are expected to show off their latest games and related products.

Sony has said it sold 3.6 million PS3s in the fiscal year ending March 31 and expects to sell another 11 million in the current fiscal year. Microsoft said in its most recent quarterly earnings report filed in April that it had shipped 11 million Xbox 360s.

Nintendo, meanwhile, claims it has sold nearly 6 million Wiis worldwide as of March 31, and more than 40 million Nintendo DS handhelds. The company has predicted it will sell another 14 million Wiis and 22 million additional DS systems by the end of the current fiscal year.

The Wii and PS3 were released within days of each other late last year. Microsoft had a head start in the current generation of consoles, having launched its Xbox 360 in 2005. Last week, the software company announced an extension of the warranty due to the high number of systems suffering from hardware failure, also called the "red ring of death."

In April, Microsoft began selling a version of its Xbox 360 with a 120-gigabyte hard drive and a souped up high-definition video connection. Called Xbox 360 Elite, the black-colored system sells for $479.99.

Xbox gamers who already own the $399.99 20-gigabyte model can buy a snap-on 120-gigabyte hard drive for $179.99.

Karraker said Sony would use the E3 show to focus on two areas: ways to increase the number of consumers who own PS3s and other products such as the PlayStation Portable handheld system, and expanding the system's library of available games.

He said Sony would be releasing 100 new video games during the current fiscal year, including 15 titles that are exclusive to the PS3 such as the hack-and-slash action title "Heavenly Sword."

Hell, if this pressures 360 to a 100 dollar price drop, I will definitely be pickin it up by the end of this year. As long as a drop happens by October.

My guess is that they don't drop the price until they get machines that won't have the same failure rate so that they don't get double burned on both the price drop and the 3 year warranty. Also, with Halo 3 coming out and so many xbox owners not yet having a 360 while waiting for Halo, I don't know if they will do it before then.

On the other hand, they may want to do it just to steal Sony's thunder and continue the momentum.

Hey, I can hope. And I know there is no way I will get a PS3 unless it somehow drops to $300, and I know that will never happen, considering the PS2 has barely dropped in price.

I'm glad to see they are dropping the price. I was excited to see this when the CC ad was leaked, but Sony refuted the ad that same day. I think it is a good thing and something they should have done at the beginning. I also hope they have some big surprises in store for E3 as far as new titles and what not.

Don't get me wrong I may go back and forth with Deslock and others with the PS3 and 360 discussion, but I do hope the PS3 succeeds. I have this fear that if it does fail that M$ will start to lose it's great customer service and fall into the trap that some many other companies have when they were the only game out there. (Atari, Nintendo, Sony and such)

As far as the 360 dropping in price. If it happens it will be the late 4th quarter or the start of the 2nd quarter 2008. They have reached a point where they are making money for each unit sold and with Halo and other titles coming out M$ may not see any need to drop the price. There is always Zabka's point to consider, for M$ to lower the price for the 360 it would really damper the PS3's price drop.

          Only time will tell...

From what I read about the features of the 80G PS3 it doesn't do anything too different that the 60G already does except for added storage capacity. Either way I look forward to see what else happens and the games that will be released.

wow, that blu-ray player, i mean ps3 is cheaper now. competition is great among the 3 gaming console giants. they each seem to have carved their own niches out of the market so far. the wii has the fun offline gaming market, the 360 has the fun online multiplayer market and the ps3 has the blu-ray market, ha.

                re

I hardly think blue-ray is something to bragg about. There is so many ways to get HD quality movies nowdays. Also with 360 already being established in the downloadable content area, PS3 is going to have to do alot more than reduce the price by 100.00 to appeal to me. Just the fact that they dropped it that much shows that they arent winning the battle. I am curious how good the PS3 customer service is. I know I had tons of problems with them for the ps2 online gaming when I first got it.

Blu-Ray is pretty much replacing the standard DVD with the quality it offers and the PS3 has a variety of downloadable content (games, demos, trailers, movies, etc) which I see many don't know this. Customer service was great on helping me get started with an online account and to get used to the many features the PS3 offers, even today I find their service reliable.

Yeah I'd have to agree with boss on that one. You can download movie trailers, game previews, demos, and even games all in HD from the PlayStation Store. I recently e-mailed Sony about retrieving my PSN pass and the reply was very helpful.

Sweet, I was going to hold out on a ps3 for a few more months and now that they're giving me 20 more gigs for the same price I was gonna plop down anyways is extra incentive for patience.

Boss I WILL be on the ps3 eventually. There may only be a small handful of us, but it won't stop me from having fun!!!

3 years Tony. I have never heard of a piece of electronics equipment being warranteed for 3 years. I would guess the failure rate is going to go down significantly once they clear out this inventory of crap and put in better designed ones (or cooler chips). One thing about the $1.5B charge they took--that isn't real cash. That is a reserve. If they believe they aren't going to use it, they can reverse the reserve and it will be added profits in the future. In the meantime, it doesn't affect their income statement after the next quarter--so they take their lumps for a quarter and it shouldn't affect the stock after that.

In the meantime, I was going to say that I was just going to cross my fingers and hope mine still holds up. But now, I don't care. I got three years with this puppy where I don't have to worry about a thing.

Aside from that, glad to see Sony drop the price. I will defiantly be picking one up sooner than I thought now. I hope this helps promote game development for the PS3.

I will be more inclined to get one if there is a potential for a division formed for a certain game within the clan. But I haven't heard of any great games

Warhawk looks like it will be pretty awesome. Other games will also be 360 games, but that doesn't mean they don't still kick ass and can be played by division on either console. There are rather limited exclusives for the PS3, but I don't think a game needs to be exclusive for the division to be had. For those of you who are uninterested in a 360 and its superior multiplayer experience, this reduced price PS3 should be of interest.

I am thinking of getting a PS3 myself---but at this point, I am so swamped with360 games (and expect to be for the rest of 2007 with Unreal Tournament, Halo3, and perhaps some other games (like COD4, Battlefield Bad Company) that I am not sure if it makes sense to get it for just Warhawk and maybe Lair.

PS--yeah Andy, I have an MBA. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything. My business school is considered one of the top finance schools in the country, but I definitely knew people who graduated who didn't have a clue about real world financial statement analysis.

If MSFT fixes this problem in new machines, then the extra warranty costs them almost nothing. If they have an immediate fix prepared that will not break again, then it will be hard for them to spend $1-1.5B on this. They charge $150 for the refurb and I think shipping is like $20. So, let's say they make margin on that refurb and assume that the cost of the repair and shipping are $100 (still a stretch is my guess, but the admin costs might add up). In order to spend $1B, then 10mm units would need to be faulty. That is nearly every 360 that has been shipped so far failing once. If they have an immediate fix, then they will never spend that much money. If they still have to repair them the crappy way they have been so far, then figure there are still odds that they get more than one return. With 11MM that have been shipped so far that are at risk (and then some more in inventory). Figure about 3MM of them will be faulty. So they are either saying that all of the 360s will fail once or a third of them will fail about three times. Both are highly unlikely. In all likelihood, they just chose to take their medicine now and if they fix this sooner, they will have upside surprise in earnings going forward.
