June console and game sales data is out. More of the same

Wii and DS dominate. 360 sells more than 2x PS3. top games are nintendo dominated. PS2 outsells 360 and PS3. Same stuff, although I imagine July numbers will look better for PS3 with the price drop. Sony is saying that they are seeing 135% increases in sales at the top 5 retailers for the PS3 since the price drop. That would pull it ahead of the 360 if they are referring to June numbers as the basis for the 135% increase. However, that would not pull it way ahead of the 360, but instead by about 30K units. I am guessing it will be more than that as some potential 360 sales are lost to the $499 PS3.

Thanx for the update, ZABKA. Can you post the link to the actual story or at least the actual numbers. July numbers should also look good for the PS3, as it was the #1 console on Amazon.com, even selling out.

Sony should not be Nintendo and be stubborn. They should keep the 60Gb version available at $499 as it was a key number for consumers. They are only keeping that price as they sell the remaining stock, but they need to realize that the PS3 is not popular at $599, no matter the pack-ins.

Besides, consumers will wait to buy the console if they think or read about a new version coming in a couple fo months with things that they would have to buy seperately otherwise.

link was posted underneath the blurb above Longhorn.

I think Sony is banking on its games to sell the system. Blu-ray wasn't enough. But now, they are going to have some kick ass games to be able to sell---which they really haven't had many of up to this point. Both exclusives and non-exclusives look great for the PS3.

But Sony put out a press release either yesterday or the day before talking about the sales bump they have seen at the 5 largest retailers since. There is a link to the article about it embedded in the story that I linked above. At this point they have seen 135% increases in the top 5 retailers. Tough to say whether that grows of if that represents pent up demand. What is interesting is that at current levels, 135% increase only pulls it ahead of current 360 monthly sales, but not ahead of the Wii. I thought we might see PS3 sales more than double since they were selling less than half of the 360--and at 135% that sounds right. Question is whether it can triple their sales or not.

Maybe not, but with big stores like Blockbuster going all Blu-ray, that is for sure not going to hurt Sony any. I don't think Sony could get more support for their Blu-ray if they owned Blockbuster (damn the sarcasm just doesn't roll off as smoothly when its typed rofl)

To be sure, Blu-ray is getting more appealing. But I don't think it is a decision maker. First, MS has said that if blu-ray wins, they will offer a blu ray component (extra cost of course like the HD-DVD). Secondly, I just don't think DVD format is going to matter much in a few years. Especially if we see more fiber optic cable out there.

            go nintendo.

i'm sure sales would be a lot better for them if the Wii had backwards compatibility like if you could plug in the GC controllers and play your older favorite games like super smash brothers. i know i would buy one.

i'm sure in a few years PS3 will become like the 360 is now. so we'll just have to wait i guess

I don't think sales would be that much better for them....places I go can't keep Wii's in stock. Also if they included the chipset from the GC, my bet is that it would cost more. That's part of how Sony is getting its PS3 costs down---no more PS2 chipset, but uses software emulators instead.

Each Wii title seems to rip to the top---perhaps because there are a limited number of games available on the system yet a pretty robust user base. Tough to say. But for a system that was originally left for dead prior to being unveiled, this thing has certainly kicked some ass.
