It is silly to believe that either of the two have come close to optimizing the performance potential in either of the consoles. They are both still relatively new with most designers having only made a handful of games on either console. The fact that the best PS2 game came out in 2007 should be indicative of the fact that better, more efficient programming and design is always possible to push the limits of the hardware.
For example, look at EA. They couldn't get Madden to work properly on the PS3 with regards to frame rate and a handful of other issues. But they have already announced that FIFA08 will be 60 fps on the PS3..so they seem to have gone up the learning curve on that.
FIFA07 offered a step up from prior offerings with a new physics engine..but it had limited multiplayer offerings. FIFA08 will offer 5v5 online multiplayer with much better AI. They claim that they hope to get 11v11 by 2010. This is indicative of the learning curve that these designers are climbing and the importance of R&D for game designers. I can't imagine that such leaps of improvement are limited to soccer games or sports games in general.
PS3 fanboys want to believe that the 360 is fully tapped out and that a game that came out less than 2 years after launch represents the pinnacle. 360 fanboys want to believe that the PS3 is too cumbersome to ever be practical for full optimization given the development costs (and limited install base). Idiocy on both fronts.

what game are you refering to zab for PS2? God of War 2 looked really good and if only i had an HDTV
Yes. God of War 2 is a far cry from the first games on PS2. To me this is evidence that quality of game is not reliant on hardware alone. So to presume any "potential" is maxed out when designers are still figuring the consoles out to begin with is silly. To presume that people who design these things will be UNABLE to really harness the PS3 is also silly.

ps3 all the way,, cant wait for socom confrontation and star wars force unleashed. oh yeah WARHAWK IS BADASS!!
Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man, that state is obsolete. A case to be filed under "M" for Mankind - in The Twilight Zone.
Well, I've read several reports that the game designers never even came close to using what ptrue potential of what the PS2 is capable of. Especiially graphics wise. Said it would take too much time and money to develop them. In the end with business, it all boils down to the "bottom line". Just compare a game like "RE4, ACzero, or FFXII, and then a game like "Evil Dead", or SWBF2. It's like they didn't even try. *Sighs* I'd rather play my wife's "Hello Kitty Cube Frenzy" for the PS1 instead.
Xbox ... the sales pitch when it came out .....
The last Game Console You Will Ever Need
Why? Because Microsoft promised online upgrades for the console ...
Didn't they just come out with 360?
Didn't they just come out with the Elite?
You can only play certain X-Box games on the 360 because of
limited backwards compatability.
You "have" to pay to play online, and in order to play ... you even have
to "host" a room.
Lots wrong with the above post. Issues have all been hashed out before. But just for clarification:
1. PS3s now have limited backwards compatability
2. Hosting a room doesn't cost anything, it is a way to allow you to have a person have "server manager" capabilities to boot idiots without the vote structure which never works right; and some games don't use the host structure)
3. the Elite and the Pro have no differences other than the hard drive size (since Pro's now come with HDMI jacks).
Sheesh...there are plenty of valid arguments to be made about why a console may suit a person over the other. But a list of inaccurate ones hardly helps those weighing the decisions.

I recomended the Elite over the regular 360 due to the GB issue. But I'm seeing more thinking over the price with the Elite. We have the Elite for $449.00. The PS3 is now $499.99. So a lot of gamers are starting to think that "If I'm going to blow that kinda money, why not spend the extra $50.00 and get a PS3. Regardless of what you might think, I do NOT influence what my customers want to buy. Dragon can back me up on this.
As I said before, I'm not that concerned over "console wars". Because gamers are gamers. I wasn't lying when I said I literally waited for years before buying a PS2 because of the cost. But as cost went down over the years, it was worth it. So I think it will be with the PS3. We now have two cases dedicated to PS3 games. It will continue to grow, and eventually, everyone that wants one will have one. It will just be a matter of time.
Whichever one he decides on, I don't think he'll be dissappointed either way.
Bingo, Deslock. In fact, both Consoles will be dropping in price a lot more I expect after the holidays. PS3 perhaps even before--the thought is that when the 60gig drives are all sold (inventory is all at stores now), that they will drop the price of the 80 gig model. I can see getting one next year assuming that prices do drop.
The 360s now have HDMI (check the box if you want one)...and the Elite has a ginormous 120 gig drive---which I think will come in more handy as both consoles will have DVR capabilities, more downloading content, and more games that are downloadable instead of on disc. So the differences become more negligible--and the price difference can easily be accounted for by the free (yet inferior) online interfaces and the Blu-ray DVD player. So the value proposition isn't so different anymore for most.
Now--it is more a question of games. And based on some poor reviews for Lair and Heavenly Sword that I have seen, the exclusives that hold water for the systems will be UT3, Halo3, Haze, etc. But the multi-console games are looking really great too--COD4 beta is simply awesome fun. Assassin's Creed should be good. Halflife2, etc. So neither console will be lacking for good games in the near future.
Basic difference is really pay for play versus the quality of the network. Hopefully that will narrow for PS3 in time as well, but as it does, I imagine that the 360 will further integration with the PC.
I was a bit surprised that the PS3 didn't outsell the 360 in July with the price cut. August will be interesting as the 360 had its price cut then. Further complicating matters is the PS3's success in Japan while the 360 is just nowhere there. Of course the Wii is smacking them both around by greater than 3 to 1 globally.
