Gamespot reviewer fired for reviewing game..

We've heard an unsettling rumor today from an anonymous tipster that longtime game reviewer Jeff Gerstmann from Gamespot has been let go. That wouldn't necessarily be newsworthy, but the conditions under which he was allegedly dismissed were. According to the source, Gerstmann was fired "on the spot" due to advertiser pressure for his review of Eidos' Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. A visit to Gamespot shows that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game has taken over the site very prominently, with backgrounds and multiple banner ads all pitching Kane & Lynch. Allegedly, publisher Eidos "took issue with the review and threatened to pull its ad campaign."

Jeff's review was certainly less than glowing. He assigned the game a 6.0, otherwise known as "Fair" on the Gamespot scale. The game is currently enjoying a Metacritic score in the 65 to 69 range, which the site describes as "mixed or average reviews." According to our tipster, it wasn't necessarily the score that was reason for Gerstmann's rumored axing, but the "tone" of the review.

Gerstmann has been no stranger to controversial reviews, as his scores of 10 for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 8.8 for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess had sensitive internet users up in arms. It's now possible that many bitter fanboys may have had their wishes for his firing granted.

As our tipster points out, if the rumor is true, it could point to a distressing precedent at Gamespot and parent company CNet. "As writers of what is supposed to be objective content, this is our worst nightmare coming to life," wrote the tipster.

Our efforts to confirm the story with Gamespot haven't proved successful. Our current requests with PR, Gerstmann and other CNet contacts have either gone unanswered or yielded a "no comment."

Update: We did get confirmation that Mr. Gerstmann is no longer with Gamespot. The circumstances in which he was terminated or left of his own accord, however, were not disclosed.

bless penny arcade for their quickness..lol

Joystiq has a lot about this as well. Apparently there is speculation that he didn't play the game very much and did his review (based on his gamer score), but that they rebut as unlikely.

Anyone that has played this game will realize he was being VERY generous with the score he gave. The game sucks more then norm at a village people reunion. The game controls are just complete garbage. The cover system doesn't work all that well, and he is right in the review about just not using it... your better off. The aim is horrible, the sprint feature is pointless as you go maybe 1/10th faster for like 3 secs. Inlimbo and me tried to play the co-op on this and had to turn it off after the first couple missions. It's one of those games that are just painful to play.

Interview on Joystiq regarding this. It appears that some sort of settlement is in the works as he is making no disparaging remarks at this time. This is most likely.

          Or.....

His firing was unrelated, so he needs to be a bit cagey for now so that people don't find out he was fired for something else since that would affect his future employment prospects.

game reviewers/raters are worthless anyways (there's built n bias ($) with their reviews, as ratix said, the review this guy gave was generous, he should have been more truthful), that's why i get my reviews from sites were the raters/reviews are actual people that BUY and/or PLAY the games not as a job, but as an actual GAMER. only draw back is the ratings/reviews happen after a game is released, were as the paid reviewers usually do their propoganda before a game is released.

I like using metacritic as it will poll all of them. The problem with forums is that fanboys and haters make them mostly useless for me. so much useless information.

I tend to find most reviews as pretty fair. I don't go by the scores, but instead by the content. How does it look, how is the story, how is multiplayer, etc. And I have avoided a number of games based on this in the past. The numbers are more likley to have an upward bias as there is likely grade inflation. But if you look at all the numbers, it can be helpful. Also, metacritic includes user reviews too.

Metacritic aggregates music, game, tv, and movie reviews from the leading critics. Only Metacritic.com uses METASCORES, which let you know at a glance how each item was reviewed.

60 metacritic score. 2.2 user score.

Some of the worst scores I have seen for a supposedly big game.

2 words: Downloadable demos. A proper demo gives you enough info to let you know if you want to play. And beta tests.

Bioshock would never have been bought by me without the demo. COD4 was a must have because of the beta. some games like Gears were just too obvious. I'd say the only games that I haven't played the hell out of are my sports games--because those are more for when I have somebody over and they don't normally game. Plus, building up your character on Tiger Woods takes too long.

Sucks that people are fired when they express their true thoughts.
What is it with game developers and rushing games?Obviously video games take quite a while to make and yet they still rush it out :(.I know if I were there i'd make a different with my opinion when making a game.(Ex.I don't want this game to be a shitty ass game,I want a good fun game with,Solid Gameplay,Storyline and extras, etc.)

Yeah but you have to think about how this is could effect you, your school, or your job. This guy was fired for giving a bad review of a sponsor's game. This sponsor bought ad space from this site and provided free games for them to test. Yet the site's employee gave their game a bad review. What did the site do? They dismissed the employee to keep the money.

Think about it and now think about how that applies to you, your school, job and government.

That's why it's big. Sure it shows how shady the industry has gotten. Makes you wonder now many other sites/reviewers think about the money before writing down a review. But it's amazing how much influence someone can have if they have money.
