    Ignorance in the media

Main topic is video games.....I love how the video games get victimized by idiot people and the media because one retard does something.

Mui, you may have taken your first big step through a much bigger world. I never take the media seriously. I know what the medias objective is. "To get people to view their publishings." So they make their story to have some sort of theme that will interest viewers. People mostly view them as innocent people giving us information. "Don't kill the messenger" But when the messenger distorts the message from the actual truth or realization then they should get shot.

A great example was when my friend got in trouble last fall when he pushed a kid at the football game. here is the article to refresh memories
General Chat. All are welcome to discuss anything they wish here. Meet friends and organize game times.

Overall all media is just like those slime balls that hide in bushes trying to get a shot of Britney Spears showing her clit.

You may already know this but before we ever judge a person look at the source of information first. Its a lesson learned in life.

Ratix where's your youtube post of all the South Park kids telling the police they were being abused by their parents and then the town was being ran by kids only cause the adults were in jail.

Kids are always gonna do stupid things, that's why god gave us hands though. To beat some ****ing sense into the little bastards. You know damn well that as soon as the cops and media left, the grandmother beat the ever living **** out of that kid.

As for the guy that was 27 in the first video. He was just a nut job that wanted to steal a few games. If it wasn't games, it would be his neighbor's house for money. How about they start blaming our shitty president, the oil companies and the banks for the economic crisis that drove him to steal in the first place.

I thought it was funny how they just assumed that it must've been GTA IV that he was really after because it's the most violent and controversial game he stole. Oh, NO! It COULDN'T'VE been Kameo or Katamari that drove him to do it.
Evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

He was caught at his parents restaurant. Just from that information speaks volumes of what kind of person he is. This guy hasn't grown up. Sounds like he is still living with his mom and dad and they wouldn't buy him a video game. ROFL Hey what other game did he steal? Why is it GTA's fault, and not the other games he stole? Typical media for you.

I turned it off after the report was done...so unless the anchors had something to say, I didn't think that was all that bad as it pertains to bashing video games for society's issues.

I actually thought it was well balanced and presented different points of view well. They could have got an inarticulate teenager to defend gaming to further enhance the view that gaming is for losers and currupts youth. But they used a grown man who is more representative of the community. Then again...every lobby I have encountered in GTA4 has been full of nothing but douchebag punks.

I expected the piece to come off as a lot more ignorant.

That 7 year old needs an ass kicking. Period.

Blaming video games(or entertainment), the president (who does suck), economics (which are a factor), oil companies (or fast food or whatever), global warming (or ghosts, honalee, or other fairy tales), or anything else misses the mark. I was a poor latchkey kid left alone with gasoline, gi joes, a bb gun, .22 rifles, a shotgun, fireworks, and a couple of video games every day when I was a kid because my parents both worked from 8 am to well after 8pm. One thing I knew implicitly: "If I am dumb with the bb gun or 22 and shoot out a window, I will get my ass beat." I rarely got GI Joe dudes... so blowing them up meant I was out of them. Being dumb with gas, firecrackers, or the .22 also probably meant the neighbors would call the cops. Again, getting my ass beat. One time I had a very unlucky ricochet that busted a window. My dad took the bb gun and tore it apart without putting it over his knee. That scared me more than a whupping.

If your 7 year old steals your SUV because "they wanna do some hoodrat stuff with their friend", you need to kick their ass. Period. Next time their friend comes over, you need to tell that kid that hoodrats end up in jail and are sorry excuses for people.

The biggest mistake parents make is taking the threat of physical punishment off the table. Doesn't mean it's a first resort, but while their young they need to understand physical pain is often a result of their actions on a very basic level.

Positive reinforcement for younger kids is a bribe... they soon learn to do the bare minimum requirements to get the bribe, which means they are being taught the one-cheek (or half assed) way is as good as doing excellently. You reward for big longterm things: getting A's, high grades on big projects, promotions in scouts, etc etc and you punish for being a piece of S^%t at any age.

As far as the dude on the motorcycle, he's an idiot. Anyone that thinks someone coding in a cubicle is after true realism has lost their mind. I think the dumbest articles ever written on video games were written about COD 4, discussing realism of the game. Anyone who has ever handled any of those guns knows that game is definitely completely a video game designed for fun twitch fests and not for anything close to reality. To say otherwise denotes a real moral flexibility, complete ignorance, or being a paid to say so.

Of course games are fun and addictiing, but I don't think it should be taken to the point where it literally runs your life where you don't use the bathroom or even brush your teeth.....much like that WoW episode of South Park lol.

I games as games. This one is going to be elaborate, so buckle in and prepare for Wall of Text time. I think video games are an extension of board games, ESPECIALLY in the strategy realm, but certainly in the social realm. Video games allow you to play a "board game" by yourself, which may take away the social aspects, but I think as internet games become more popular they are coming full circle. I really like being able to play games with old friends who are now spread out across the country now. It's very reminiscent of when we used to have to play split screen co-op, only know we all have our own screens. I'm going to make a few recommendations, though on board games, because I think a lot of you guys, esp Deslock and some others that are strategy nuts would love.

In Europe, families still sit around around for hours per night and play board games as a family. If any of you have ever played the more "german" type board games you will understand why. A game like Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne are so very different from our American Parker Brother games, who are largely developed to "get to the end of the board" that they frequently are played as a "zero sum game" competition because they are designed that way.

In Settlers of Catan, luck still plays a factor, but the thinking is about resouces. Money of course is usually the only resource in American games like Monopoly, Life, etc etc etc. But in Settlers you have straw, brick, wood, etc etc etc, and you have to have different amounts of materials to build different things, like a section of road, a house, a mansion, etc, and everything is worth points... the first to 10 wins, but on each players turn they can make a trade offer to another player and negotiate (I'll give you 3 straws and a sheep for a wood and a brick). This makes the time entirely social and strategic, because having a wealth of one resource may make you more about to trade, but trading into someone's needs to heavily will hand them a victory. A game of this takes between 30 and 60 minutes, and it is FUN. Highly recommended, and social.

Carcassonne Is just awesome. In carcassonne, you have 10 dudes and a stack of tiles. The tiles all contain different things on their borders, like one border could be a town's wall with the other 3 being grass, while another tile will have a piece of road running through the center and through another side (forming a T joint) and open grass on the 4th side. The brilliance is, every turn you place a tile and OPTIONALLY a dude ONE THE PIECE YOU JUST PLACED. A Dude placed on a road is a thief, and owns every piece of road connected to it until both sides are connected, a dude in a piece of town becomes a knight, a dude on a monastary becomes a monk, and a dude in a field becomes a farmer. You can't place a dude in a place where he is directly touching another dude with the same job. So if you lay down a piece of road, and a dude, you have a dude on an incomplete section of road, the next person may place a piece of road entering a town and MAY place a dude on the TOWN, because that would be a knight, but MAY NOT place him on the road, as your thief owns any road directly attached to it. If the next player does the same thing on the OTHER side, so the road is three tiles long, and puts a farmer in a field instead of a knight, then that would complete the road. Player one gets his dude back plus three points. (section of road = 1, X 3 sections). As the map gets larger, you may run out of dudes, as roads are left larger and incomplete, and towns become huge with multiple players fighting for them by investing more and more troops (towns are worth 2 points per section, roads worth 1, and a cloister worth 9, but difficult to complete). And when all tiles are placed, you figure up the farmers. You take all the contiguous grassland, and for each city the grassland touches, the player with control of it by having the most farmers living in it gets 4 points... the problem is you never get a farmer back until the very end of the game, so you have a very interesting strategy dynamic at play for the entire game... if people are building a lot of small towns, farmers may be the deciding factor, where as if everyone gets in on the action by trying to build just a couple enormous cities, the farmer impact is seriously nerfed. A road may end up being 12 tiles long and uncontested. The game is just AWESOME and social, and a round of it takes 45 minutes.

Blood Feud in New York IS AWESOME. You have limo's, helicopters, speedboats, thugs, henchmen, hitmen, 5 family members (plus a BOSS), corrupt police precincts, hideouts and Penthouses. It is up to 5 players warring for mob control of NY, and it's SO GOOD. Any thug, henchman, or hitman or family member can take control of neighborhoods, but the brilliance is that family members act as multipliers when not IN THE SAME NEIGHBORHOOD, so if you have the 5 family members and the Boss all spread out, and own 250 bucks worth of property, you get 250 x 6 = 1500 bucks at the end of your turn to hire dudes or buy penthouses or vehicles. The downside is that if you have 6 family members spread out, and they don't have backup, another player COULD send a thug, henchman and hitman to go attack one in a helicopter. If they succeed in the combat round, (think Axis and Allies), they choose to either kidnap the fam member or kill him. He can demand anything he likes to return the family member, but if he kills him, the fam member is removed entirely. If you kill someone's Boss, all their troops go back into the pool, and the player who killed the boss takes control of the family members, who come off the board and then are placed at the new bosses HQ and are part of his fam, so that he can now have a multiplier as high as 11. Awesome, fun, surprisingly FAST to play for how combat heavy it is (45 min, 90 TOPS). Social.

Risk. Sucks... fun (I guess) but way too simplistic. Too reliant on luck, and too long for what it is. Still Social though, and backstabbing is encouraged.

Diplomacy, The inverse of Risk. There is no luck, no dice, you can have one and only one army per country, and the 90% of the game is played away from the board. This is THE BEST STRATEGY/POLITICAL game ON THE PLANET. !!!BUT YOU MUST KNOW NOW THIS GAME FREQUENTLY WILL DESTROY FRIENDSHIPS AND CAUSE FISTFIGHTS!!! Here's how it works. It's WW1 and each player takes control of one European power, up to 7. Every player gets a copy of the map, a pen, and places there units, THEN, you set a watch for 30 minutes. Players leave the board, grab drinks, chill, etc... and make plans. You are encouraged to spy, to listen in, to form alliances, and do anything you like in the rulebook. When Player A and B go in a seperate room, Players C D and E may not like it and may discuss how they can all peacefully spread out. and build defenses. All of a sudden player B comes back in the room and goes to smoke a cigarette, Players C and D follow him out and smoke with him too, making Player E very nervous, until Player A assures them that he and Player B aren't going to hurt HIM, but go after player C. Players A and E agree to be friends, and A even asks E to attack player D in very specific strategies. Meanwhile the 3 players outside assure each other they aren't going to attack anyone this round. This goes on for 30. Minutes. At the end of the 30 minutes, all players have 2 minutes to write down orders for ever army under their control, NO MATTER WHAT HAS BEEN AGREED ON, ONLY THE ORDERS WRITTEN COUNT. At the end of the 2 minutes, all players turn over their orders at the same time and all combat and movement is resolved, SIMULTANEOUSLY, if an order in incorrectly written, then it doesn't happen, orders cannot be rescinded and what happens, happens. Every unit is as strong as any other unit, so a unit attacking a unit does NOTHING... you have to have, using states for example:

VA attacks NC... VA attacks NC, but since it is one on one nothing happens and VA goes back to VA. BUT, if the player controlling TN supports VA, then the army in VA is supported by TN, it's two on 1 and the NC player is dislodged and retreats to anywhere available, if nowhere is available, the army is destroyed. If TN tells the NC player the VA attack is coming, TN can doublecross by attacking VA instead of supporting VA in attacking NC, the NC player may Attack SC and move there, the TN player may attack VA while VA is attacking NC and thus occupy VA and take the capital which would INFURIATE the VA player.

Oh man. I need to just start a board game thread, but my point is Reading was once considered a waste of time, the result and cause of people "not being socially adept", but now reading is looked on as a sign of intelligence. Hmmm. VG's are just another form of entertainment, and no more "harmful or addictive" than reading, TV, theater, opera or anything else.
