If you are being a bar cover band, you need songs that the crowd knows. Red hot chilis, pearl jam, stone temple pilots, green day, live, u2, violent femmes

For more recent music, the killers, my chemical romance, panic at the disco, deathcab, all work.

Tony you would pick GWAR. I would say some red hot chili peppers. Also, what type of a bar? I mean if its say a biker bar they will want to hear a different genre of music.

Some of these suggestions are songs that I was also thinking about but didn't have time to list out. Renegade is awesome. But some of these songs aren't garagey enough--p gabriel or the wall. Dark side of the moon might be better.

Nirvana is a good suggestion and most of their songs are just power chords.

"Beefcake the Mighty, clotted with spew. His sword falls, skulls burst in two. The eyes burst from sockets, he is not through. Thousands of warriors he does this to. Piling the corpses of those that he slew. Untill it was hard to tell if the pile grew!"-GWAR

The problem with Nirvana is they were a 3 piece, which isn't great for bands as large as yours, plus they were so unique in regards to personality that covering them is virtually impossible to do well... if you do a Nirvana radio hit and it isn't AMAZING, you lost the crowd... whereas something less anthematic you can do with what you wish and the crowd may like it a lot.

Some of the best live covers I ever heard from bar bands were:

Ten Years After - I'd love to Change the World (Done very raw and with BIG guitar)
The Cure - Lovesong (By an all-black old school BLUES band complete with congos and a 70 year old lead singer... UNBELIEVABLY amazing cover)
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game (by a band playing a wedding in the style of an old southern rock band... like Marshall Tucker or Lynyrd Skynyrd)
And of course this one, by this guy (I don't consider him a bar band... he's too big, but he's coming soon):

                  [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43Fj4tsObyw"]YouTube - Little Wing[/ame]

Yeah. Early Cuyler from Squidbillies. And yeah... he is up there with SRV on guitar chops... seriously, hendrix is rockin... but this guy smokes his ass on his own song.

Unknown Hinson=ROCK YOUR FUCKING FACE OFF!! This guys playing Little Wing TOTALLY got me laid the time I went and saw him. Keyser can verify that. Dude if there are hot girls you guys need a couple PD songs to play. If you do not know what PD is stop playing guitar and start sucking dick in the Newark Airport bathroom lol. Clapton is great PD music just a hint. But yea if you get a chance to see Unknown Hinson its by far one of the BEST shows I have ever been to.

Honestly, I don't know what the fuck I'm doing anymore.
It doesn't seem like I have any fucking say in this band what-so-ever.

                          They want to play

The Offspring - Self Esteem (I actually like this one)
Cheap Trick - Surrender (I like this song but my bro is on crack if he thinks we can sing good backups on it.)
Greg Kihn - The Break-Up Song (Not diggin it.)
Violent Femmes - Blister In The Sun (I can't even listen to this song.)

And thats it. 4 songs. They want to play from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. with 21 songs.

I've already given my opinions on the show and they just scoffed or laughed at me. So now I'm just kinda standing in the corner, laughing at them, because if they bomb, I'm gonna be saying in my head "I tollld you soooo."

21 songs? That will not last 2 and a half hours unless you guys jam out for awhile on some songs. But Blister in the Sun is great to play at a bar.

Our drummer has absolutely no confidence in himself whatsoever, so he feels like learning more than 4 songs will be overkill.

And I can see why he has no confidence because he can't even figure out how to play Plush right.

I can learn simple songs with the snap of a finger, so it's hard for me to understand.
