Dam NY Times giving away the one good Government Secret I knew.
"Thrawn: "Do you know the difference between an error and a mistake, Ensign?"
    Colclazure: "No, sir."
Thrawn: "Anyone can make an error, Ensign. But that error doesn't become a mistake until you refuse to correct it." [points at Pietersen, Rukh kills him] "Dispose of it. The error, Ensign, has now been corrected. You may begin training a replacement."
―Grand Admiral Thrawn, punishing a naval officer for failure

I was Army Reserve for 8 years, One year active, three years ready and four years inactive. I chose this route since I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. Just like when Zero and I spoke things were way different then it is today. I was a 63B small wheeled vehicle mechanic. Didn't do much with vehicles though. I was in an Engineering battalion and did more construction than anything else. Go figure. One thing I can say is I saw guys at formation in the beginning of the day and at the end of the day. Did the usual shit like yearly qualifications and PT. Almost made it to the first Dessert Storm, it was over before it got started. My family thought I was nutz for volunteering. My biggest regret is that I didn't go active. I ate that shit UP! I was an expert marksman each and every time with 38 and 39 out of 40! Funny from a guy who never fired a weapon before. My brief military career is one of the best milestones of my life. The is NOTHING like the experience of being a soldier! Seriously nothing. To this day when I workout I do so with a little drill sergeant on my shoulder yelling at me, pushing me to one more rep.

My 1st unit was a Sapper battalion. 307th combat engineers had more ranger tabs than any unit in 82nd. My psg had triple stack sf ranger airborne. So that got me into the high speed shit. Had a selection date for sf but a week prior broke my hand. Then came on orders to cross the street to 3bstb then orders to deploy w/ 1-17 cav (all 82d) instead of osut they shoulda sent me to Ranger school. Like u said army is retarded sometimes. My biggest regret( besides getting booted) is I never got either a ranger tab or a green beret. I truly did enjoy the suck. I loved the mud and the hooah shit. But once out I said I'd never be clean shaven again or wake up b4 0600. Ok I'm gonna shut up rant complete.
Zero, they NEVER ever should've even considered your OSUT as "downtime". That's outright bullshit. Thank God you had a few people in your corner. Yes, they should've indeed sent you to Ranger School, but if you did hurt your hand, I can understand why they didn't right then. I cannot help but feel after reading your story, you did get a raw deal.
Like I said before, if you ever need to vent or just talk about shit, please feel beyond free to PM me.

But once out I said I'd never be clean shaven again or wake up b4 0600.
For me, once I was out, it was never ever running again. God how I hated all the F'n running. Our Colonel was one of those running and fitness guru's and he absolutely loved marathon running, so he thought we all should too. And if we moaned when he announced how far we had to run that morning at PT, he'd just add more miles. When I was out, I promised myself that I would never run again, unless I saw a hundred dollar bill blowing down the street, or if a hot girl said "If you can catch me, I'll have sex with you." (That I have to admit is the "cleaned up" version.) B4 0600 I completely understand also. That Colonel was a "sonuva bitch", but I can't hate on him completely, as he was also the first man to pin a medal on me. Zero, the Army kinda fucked me over in a way also, as Cotto knows. But thanks to this man I'm also now a Chef. So in a weird way, I kinda owe him one if he's still alive.

A lot of non military people do not understand nor know that most SF soldiers are in other units. They think Airborne guys have their own group, Rangers, and Green berets. Or that anyone in any branch of the military can apply. You can be Air Force and sign up for Army Ranger school, or be a cook in the Army and sign up to try out for the Navy Seals. And that there are some really bad ass Commandos in the Air Force, and in the Navy.

One of the guys at my work that I love, was a Marine commando in Vietnam. Most don't even know that there are Marine commandos. All they think of is Seals.

One of the things I loved about it was serving with so many other soldiers in other countries militaries. I served alongside Canadian SF guys, German Grenzschutzgruppe 9, and a few from other middle eastern groups (Long before the shit we have going on now, this was in the 80's.). We had some totally awesome parties together.

I was beyond pissed off when the Army went with the whole beret thing. It SO pissed me off. I had to EARN my black. Even though it had a "different" symbol on it, it still pisses me off. I'm glad they kinda changed it, but I still hate the new BDU's. I may just be an old timer, but I hate them.
So much that even on BF3, I changed my avatar to old skool "forest pattern". :D

For the dress uniforms though, did they ever get rid of that nasty "cunt cap" we all hated ?. From what I've seen the black beret is still worn, and the Ranger beret is now shit brown instead of black. I was SO happy to to get my NCO rank, so I could get the officers hat to replace that nasty Cunt Cap. I still have it to this day. :D

Thanks Stryker. The guys down range really do appreciate the care packages. I know when I would get one it would make me feel not so far away from home. Even if I don't think I used half the stuff in it lol.

Yea when ever we'd get care packages it was usually a mad dash to rat fuck it. (tear thru it grabbing what we want and leaving the rest tossed all over)if you take to long you get nothing useful. I had enough soap and shampoo to last me 10 yrs. and many a time I wouldn't have eaten if it wasnt for what we got in the boxes.

Lol... I'm glad the guys actually like them. I wasn't sure if there were going to. I was just trying to something to say thank you to all the guys out there. I'm planning on volunteering here on a regular basis.

So, my sister started volunteering for some organization that basically "adopts" soldiers and you write to them and send them packages. The only difference is they requested some different items than candy or kool aid. Mostly it was booze and porn lol

I guess that's why the guy said to empty a shampoo bottle and fill it with liquor.
