So I was on my laptop and suddenly got a Mcafee pop-up saying "Application cannot be applied. File *insert name* is infected. Do you wish to activate your antivirus program?" so I click yes but it turns out I don't have the full version of Mcafee and it sends me to a page to purchase it. I keep on getting the same pop-up from Mcafee and a message saying "Your computer is being attacked blah blah blah." What can I do? I don't want to spend so much money on the program and I'm a noob when it comes to handling something like this. Is there a free antivirus program I should download or is there a more simple way of handling this?
Infected?

Well one way or another you have a virus. Either it's a fake alert trying to trick you, or mcafee actually detected something for once.
Go to another computer, and go to mcafee.com website. Check if you have an account or not, and if your subscription is still good. This will at least give you an idea of the severity. If McAfee detected it, it might be a low risk virus. If not it's a fake alert, and I would follow the steps [ame="http://www.darksidealliance.com/showthread.php?t=30395"]HERE[/ame]
Use the McAfee Removal Tool to completely uninstall mcafee. Don't trust the windows or built in uninstaller. They sometimes leave files, registry entries and services installed.
AVG is the best way to go for a free AV solution. Also Malwarebytes is good to keep around. Between those two, you should be able to handle 90% of threats.Last edited by RaTix; 02-05-2010, 08:41 PM."POWER!!! UNLIMITED POOWWWEEEER!!!!!!

Doesn't look like I have an account at their site. Should I go ahead and remove Mcafee not knowing the severity? Since I would be doing this on another computer, will it be removed on my laptop and will I be able to install the antivirus program?Last edited by BOSS; 02-05-2010, 09:43 PM.sigpic

Download ccleaner from filehippo.com, you can use that to uninstall mcafee completely. The you can also download AVG 9.0 from filehippo as well and install.
Ccleaner is a good registry fixer as well. After you uninstall Mcafee you can remove all the registry data on Mcafee using ccleaner.

Boss, I hate to say it, but I think you're screwed...
I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago, but the virus mimicked my windows defender and stupid me, clicked on it and just let it into my system...
DON"T pay this Mcafee anything, chances are, its not them... if nothing else works, you'll end up in my shoes and have to get the whole thing wiped like I did...
The differences are so subtle that you just can't tell.. I tried removing the fake from my system and there was no luck...
I hope you don't have the same thing I did.. but best of luck to you if you do...“Nobody will ever win the battle of the sexes. There's too much fraternizing with the enemy.” - Henry KissingerComment

Doing the AVG scan right now and it seems to be "stuck" on temporary internet files (although the category is blinking). How do I know when the scan is done?sigpic

Yeah I noticed it continued scanning. What does it mean if it has "Locked File. Not Tested" after it scans a category?sigpic

Well it was a basic warning that came with the pop-up I mentioned so I apologize for the lack of description. However, I can say in confidence that the article states my exact problem...I'm just wondering if the source sounds reliable to you guys before deciding to DL their removal program.Last edited by BOSS; 02-06-2010, 01:49 AM.sigpic

You have a "Fake Alert" virus. Which can come bundled with all types of nasty shit. Running any AV software (McAfee, Norton, AVG) is pointless as those viruses are specifically aimed at disabling AV software, and hiding from scans. Follow the guide in the Conficker thread."POWER!!!
