    Internet Upgrade

Been having an issue with my ISP over the weekend and it still hasn't been resolved. Could use some input on this. My internet speed was 2.5 mb/s and I decided to get it updated to 10 mb/s. Since the upgrade, I noticed my internet was actually slower on all my devices (new laptop, PS3, etc). So I called them up and after rebooting, etc they said it has something to do with the amount of copper wiring outside not being able to transmit the new speed. I even tested the upload/download speed and it went as low as 0.22 mb/s. So I was waiting for the technician since this morning...being told BS that he'll be here at 8 am, then 9, then noon, then whatever. Obviously I got sick of waiting so I called my ISP again and went through troubleshooting...basically they tried to convince me that something is wrong with ALL my devices and is unlikely on their end...

I am 110% sure it's not on my end because everything was fine prior to this and the first answer I got about the wiring seems more plausible. Probably won't get a straight answer till the technician comes by, but wait, they're already done working today and tomorrow is a holiday so I have 2 more days to deal with shitty internet.

Best part was the guy on the phone told me "my connection is phenomenal!" but as I told him: "I'm not getting that speed!"

Hence why I haven't joined you guys on BF3 or Starhawk lately (and I'm dealing with a cold). I can get on PSN and Netflix, but multiplayer games give me issues now. Even the buffer rate on Youtube is screwed up.

Surprisingly this isn't Comcast I'm talking about either. Any suggestions? I've checked my settings and nothing is wrong, so I'm convinced it's on my ISP's end.

Lol Yeah that sounds like the same problem that I had. Turned out that the same exact thing I had. Turned out that the connection from the house to the pole outside used a million year old wire. They would tell us our connection was "great" when we called in and the service guy would say the same thing. Maybe you should tell the ISP to check the wiring outside the house.

I have a 5m/b connection and at times I am so laggy I can't play. I had 50meg but it wasn't unlimited and it worked great. I'm not sure what the problem is now. I think in my case it's the piece of shit, out dated modem they rent us.

DSL, cable? How old is the wiring, it could be that... Could be your modem/router... However, it is odd that it worked fine and since upping the speed it stop slow. Seems like your ISP would be able to test that.

I think you are being given a bunch empty answers from your ISP. You stated that your network was working fine with another connection at 2 mb/s and now, at 10 mb/s you aren't even getting a half of mb/s. The ISP is just buying time for whatever reason and are not addressing your true problem which is them. If I had an upgrade an immediately noticed slower connections on all of my devices, I would dump that ISP that day or soon as possible. Your wiring is not the problem in this case because it has already supported 2 mb/s. I could see your current wiring as a problem if you at least noticed 2 mb/s out of the 10 mb/s they promised you.

This situation truly annoys me. It would at least make sense if my connection speed stayed the same as Regent mentioned, but to go lower? WTF? I'm starting to think I'm having the same issue as Broc though. They mentioned the wiring was outdated and before that they said I should be getting 3 mb/s with my old plan, but only got as high as 2.5. At least that guy I talked to seemed to know what he was talking about and not try to put the blame on my end like the guy I talked to today did. I'm very tempted to switch my ISP, but not sure who works in my area. Might have to look into it if they fail to resolve this.

They tried to blame my router/modem first before they said it could be all my devices. I mean seriously? My PS3, my brand NEW laptop, PC, and other devices all have something wrong with them when they were just fine before? Their stupidity/lack of responsibility amazes me. To top it off, they wanted to charge me to send a Technician to work after hours when he sould have been here Saturday and this morning.

Hey Boss. I'm guessing you're using DSL?

When you upgraded your plan did you get a new modem from the ISP?

If you didn't get a new modem did the ISP do a firmware update for the modem?

Have you tried plugging your laptop or your PC directly into the modem via an Ethernet connection? If so what was the speed on Speed Test? If not try it and post your Up and Down speeds.

It could be something weird like your modem needs updating. This is basing things on that your ISP provides your modem. If you got a new modem it might be that your modem is also a router which if you're using your own router that could give you issues. Hope that helps you troubleshoot some, if you haven't had to do that with your ISP all ready.

With your ISP make sure you get a credit for your bill for the disruption in your service and the missed appointment from the technician.

              1. Yes, I'm using DSL.
              2. I did not get a new modem.
              3. Not sure if they did or not. I've asked them if I needed to to do anything on my end before upgrading and they said no. I'll have to ask tomorrow.
              4. Yesterday during troubleshooting I connected my PC directly to the modem and they told me to check the speed at their site, but it was not able to perform a speed test. I didn't really notice a difference.

My PS3 is using a wired connection and I'm still getting the same slow speed when I'm on the web browser. Tomorrow I'm going to make sure they take care of this shit. I'll keep you guys posted. But the first thing I'm going to do when this is taken care of is go on a knifing spree in BF3 or maybe just bomb the shit out of people in my chopper...haven't decided. :emperor:

Sounds like someone screwed up the configuration somewhere down the line. If all you did was upgrade the bandwidth those are normally just configuration changes on the ISP side. The end of the year brain farts I guess. You're still using (1) pair of wire so nothing changes there. If you're dealing with 1st level support ask for you're service call to be escalated to level (2) or even (3). Level three will be the most helpful. If you're dealing with a reseller. Ask to have a service tech dispatched to verify the line. Worst case scenario ask to go back to (2) Mbps and try again later, but before that ask to speaks to sales, money talks!

Dam Boss that sucks. I would shop around and get a quote from another ISP. If you current ISP is unwilling to fix the issue tell them that you got a quote from another ISP and you are going to take it. That sometimes gets the gears moving ISP's hate lossing customers.

At the end of the day DSL sucks. But in some situations cable can be bad like if you live in a crowded area like me and Solo. We have too many people on the same Node. Fiber is the best way to go and you get the best speeds.

Finally got this damn issue fixed! Technician came by and first he checked the connection directly to see if the speed was there. It was, but wasn't being picked up by the modem for some reason. I told him there was a power surge during the time my plan was being upgraded and if that could have damaged the modem (even though I have a surge protector). He said it's possible so he tried a new modem, but no dice. :(

At this point he calls up the ISP and it turns out they didn't reset the settings for the new modem.

Now everything is working and my speed is where it should be (10 mb/s), so I can get over the headache of feeling like I'm in the Dark Ages. I'm back and ready to KILL! KILL! KILL!

Cotto, I heard some good things about Fiber. Can you confirm if it's worth it or not?

It depends on the amount of users you have on your network. For me it would be as bettween me and my wife we have 2 PC, a tablet, my smartphone, the xbox and PS3 that all can be on and cunsuming bandwith. We use video and audio streaming and all of my dam video game playing. So having the ablilty for true at your fingers entertainment is worth it for me.

Oh and I'm glad your stuff got fixed!

Cool. QOS settings are the culprit of most issues when the physical data communications equipment has not changed. Once you decide to make the jump over 10Mbs you'll have to go Ethernet or Fiber. You'll like fiber. In my area it's become even cheaper so I now have 50 Mbps down/25Mbps up. This was only a $5 increase on my bill. It doesn't make me a better player though ... LOL. It's a good thing I have it, with numerous laptops, iphones, ipads and an android phone it's good to have the bandwidth there. I forgot to mention the TV service and phone also ride on the same fiber cable. So far no issues, except once that I had to reset the system by unplugging the UPS battery. I"ve had it for (3) years and I would never go back. I would get rid of my landline and TV before giving up my internet connection.... but don't tell my wife that!

Just when I thought I was out of the woods...I've been getting logged off BF3 and PSN. My old modem, if I recall, was in bridge mode for my Netgear router with the port settings to get NAT 2 on my PS3. I'm still getting NAT 2 and my internet works fine, but BF3 and PSN seem to be an issue for some reason. Any ideas? My new modem is a PK-5001Z and it is considered a modem/router so I'm not sure if that's a problem or not. I'd love to avoid talking to my incompetent ISP again, so any help from you guys would be appreciated.

Maybe it's something with PSN tonight like ND posted, but I see the rest of you guys had no problem...and as I type this I see you guys jumping offline like flies lol. Any issues for you guys?

Unless you asked for it to be in bridge mode chances are they left it default. Before you call see if you can look up the default username and password for it and change it yourself. Either the router makers or your ISP might have it online somewhere. Broadband forums are a good place to look for it.

humm ... interesting. This was happening to me too. I just recently changed my switch. I was using a Netgear switch with my Verizon router. The router's ports and my switch's ports started to give me issues with the PS3 or vice versa. It was as if the auto port negotiation was not working. I tried setting it to 1000Mbs full duplex and a static IP address. That didn't work out either. I tried a data capture on my network, but didn't get too far. It was too time consuming to troubleshoot so I purchased a new switch and swapped out my Ethernet cables. I normally will take the time out but god forbid there is no internet access in my house. Mutiny I tell ya. I'm now waiting for my CAT6 bulk cable to arrive so I can add an additional run for the PS3. Yea .. I know sounds extreme, but I've had no problems since with the new switch. Check your port settings and see if it's negotiating correctly. The Netgear equipment is good, but I do know they can have problems detecting ports. It's hard to troubleshoot them since they have no access to a command line of GUI. Let me know how it goes.
