A little help for a stupid question I should know.

Ok I am going to hardwire my ps3 ...
So cat 6 - from line to back of modem
ethernet to back of ps3
simple....
DO I USE A SPLITTER OR WHAT to get another ethernet cable out to my router.
The router does not have a spot for a cable out.

Right now the set up is Phone line my modem ethernet to 1st router and then bridged over to another router in the house where it is picked up by my ps 3. via wireless.
I am a mac guy and the routers are a express and a older airport base station.

What I am going to do is reverse all this and start the process at my ps3 so it will go phone line to modem ethernet to ps3 AND to router #1 and then go on to the other computers.

if not you may want to get a switch and use that.

There's also no need for a Cat 6 you might as well go with the cheaper Cat 5. If the tech the cable plugs into is doesn't support the benefits of Cat 6 no need to get it. Cat 5 should be more then fast enough.


So basically your network goes like this

Wall--->modem--->1st router (wired)--->2nd router (wireless)

There's no free ports in the 1st router?

No the 1st router was designed to be just a bridge it does have a usb port but nothing else I am using it this way because it is a it is a lot newer than my org. router and offers better distance. The base station does have another outlet so maybe I need to reverse the order again. I used cat 6 because I thought that that was what I used several years ago when I ran the line out to my shop it was a high ed phone line covered in water prof GOOOOO, BIG TIME MESSY . But this is not the same and it was only 10 cent more per foot and I only need 30 feet.

For the router I have a Linksys that I flashed with Tomato as my firmware. It runs great and the only time I've had trouble with my computers or 360 was if I left my P2P up and running. Before Tomato I used WW-DRT and that worked good too, but the newest update seemed to slow things down for me.

Here in our apartment the one wireless signal is strong enough to reach all the rooms. If I need any boost I can get that through Tomato's software. It'll let me up the power a bit on the router to get a stronger signal.

Basically Tomato will let you switch out your default firmware for your router and replace it with one that lets you have more options. As far as I know it only works with Linksys routers, but there's a ton of other firmwares out there for different routers.

I like it because I can view traffic, monitor my bandwidth, helps with opening up my 360's NAT and allows more options for my P2P.
